I don't know if the Europeans are jealous, but they certainly believe that "study" that has been published explaining the terrible education in the USA. The truth is on a whole the public education system is not terrible far from it in fact. There are certain states (ex. Arizona) that have an absolutely terrible public education system and it throws off the average of the country dramatically. In the midwest and southern states you will find some of the best public schools not only in the country, but world. In that part of the country the students usually surpass a lot of Europeans. I do beleive that the East coast by a large majority far outranks the west coast in education. If you compared the education to states with the best education system with the whole of Europe, you would see an entirely different result. It is no coincidence that the major Ivy League universities are back east. Even the state colleges like Michigan, Penn and several in Wisconsin to name a few are on par with the Ivy Leagues. They are just as competitive and it is extremely hard to get accepted. Education and tradition is valued more in that part of the USA. I think most Europeans let the superficial, relaxed, "stupid" culture of the west coast define all of the USA. I live in the southwest and I can confirm education here is not up to the standard of the colleges back east. Most west coast schools are "party schools" and believe me there are plenty of "stupid europeans" here making fools of themselves. People choose to come out here from all over the world not because of the great education opportunities ( though we do have some), but for the weather and party going life style.
