Hey Folks --

My 2700 doesn't seem to give much of an EPG. Often times there's no info on programs, and if I bump ahead a few hours most times all I see is info not available. Any reason my EPG is pretty much useless? Should I park it on a certain channel for a bit or something? I did try to call Bell but it was like pulling one's own teeth. Hades, I don't even think the lass knew what I was on about. Thanks for reading my blithering.

See, sarcasm can be humorous. In future I'll try to be a little less like Don (Mr Warmth) Rickles.

Try removing the Smart Card, until you see the System Info Screen. Then re-insert the Smart Card.

It will re-boot the receiver and 'should' download the Guide data.

I was just reading in another post about firmware updates, and was wondering if this might be the problem. If I'm reading this other thread correctly, the unit must be powered down before it will receive new firmware, but not to turn it on while it's downloading said 'ware. Q? How do I know if it's downloading or not -- or when it's done? I should add, I never turn the unit off, just the telly.

But you're saying it's just a matter of taking-out and re-inserting the smartcard?

This will give you the Guide Data, which was your original question.

Just turn your receiver off overnight and it will update the software.

Argh. Maybe I'll have to get an updated receiver. Oh well, I'll give it a shot this eve' anyhoo.

That's because the STB needs to be turned off, not powered down. When it's "off" it's actually in standby and can receive the download. When it's unplugged, receiving no power, it can't do anything. Did you expect some sort of "magic" to download the EPG without power? ;)

If you have a few spare minutes, just turn it off now and leave the TV switched on. You should see a message on screen after a couple of minutes saying it is downloading new software.

If you do not see this, then it is also possible that you need to change a setting in the Menu.

Somewhere in the Menu it will have "allow Updates Without my permission", this must be checked to allow the receiver to take updates.

With non-PVR models, the guide is limited to about 48 hours instead of the 9-day guide that PVR's have. In addition, models with limited RAM memory can only access 2-3 hours of EPG info at a time.

In addition, the 2700 has little internal memory so it can only store a small portion of the EPG in memory and there must wait to download more as you scroll forward.

As Pinza mentioned, you should turn the unit off when not in use as it will update the guide when "off" thus reducing the load time when you do use it.

There are however some bugs that will cause "no info" to appear at times when it shouldn't.....

No. The 2700 has a single green LED. A solid "On" state means the TV output is enable and the unit is in a fully functional state. "Flashing" means the unit is receiving a firmware update and you should not attempt to use it until the unpdate completes. Even though the unit is "off" in this state, a text message is usually sent to the TV output at this time. If the green LED is not lit, then the unit is in standby (assuming the A/C power is applied). As mentioned, the unit is never truly "off" unless A/C power is removed.

These states apply to the older models such as the 2700, 4100, etc. Newer models and PVRs in particular have more indicator LEDs.

Are you sure this is an output rather than an input? Many TVs in this age bracket have a video/audio input on the front for a VCr or camcoder hookup. It would seem strange that a TV would only have a coax/ntsc input and a composite output. In any case, it is unlikely to make a whole lot of difference, and you can obviously choose to use it or not should it actually be an input, but the picture *may* be slightly clearer in addition to hopefully providing a blank/no input signal to the TV rather than "snow" when the STB is "off".

Not sure what's going on Pinza . . . I hit the power on remote and the all I get is white snow on the telly screen. Seems to power off, not turn off. Can't seem to get it into standby mode as 57 reminded us all so very poignantly.

I do have it set for updates without permission. Oh yeah, fell asleep with the bloody thing on again last night. D'oh!

White snow would indicate to me at least, that you connect via a coaxial cable to the Tv using Channel 3 or 4. Thats not a problem.

Yes, dos', I'm positive it's an output. Or at least it's never grabbed an input signal. Just for the halibut I tried to input a sig' to it the other day, and nothing doing. Then again, I reserve the right to be barmy.

Hey Pinza. Just gave the smartcard bit a try, but the EPG is still riddled with info not availble. Should it have populated immediately, or does it take some time after the smartcard re-insert?

So . . . how do I tell if it's in standby and not powered off? And yes, I use coaxial for all connections. Once I turn it off shouldn't the other light come on? Eh, I don't know what the hades I'm doing wrong.

I only had the timer shut it off for an hour at night, in hopes that a cold boot would force it to download more than two hours of the EPG, ready for use the next day. No dice.
