Enlarged Gallbladder

Last night I started getting pain in my stomach and chest. It went on for a few hours and just kept getting worse. It got so bad that I thought I was having a heart attack. My husband took me to the ER, a cat scan was done and I was told that the pain was from my gallbladder. It was very large, consistant of someone who had not eaten for a very long time. I had no stones at all.
Why would I have a gallbladder attack if I don't have stones and what would cause my gallbladder to be so large?
I have an appt. with my doctor next week and was told I may need surgery.
Anyone have the same situation?
I have not eaten all day today because I'm afraid of another attack.
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I can totaly sympathize with the gall bladder pain. I had to have mine taken out when I was 16. I had the all of the 4 f's (female, fair, fertile, and unfortunately fat lol) that make you more likely to have gallbladder issues. For me I didn't had any gallstones at first when I started to have attacks, but they did develop pretty quickly afterwards. I managed to fold my gall bladder in half when I fell off my horse. Have you been in an accident in the past couple of months? or fallen down stairs some times its just how you land that can mess something up.

My surgeon told me post that my gall bladder was so large because the way mine was folded it was consticting the bile duct and my gall bladder was HUGE by the time it was taken out. (my mom looked at the ultrasound screen and asked if it was my liver!!)

Try to eat small meals through out the day, large meals or higher fat meals can trigger gall bladder attacks. Every Doctor is different but mine suggests 10 grams of fat a day or less especially when I was really bad right before my surgery. Not eating will make it 100 times worse when you do eat.

The surgery is a breeze now compared to before, my mom had to have the hack and slash method right after she delivered my bro because he squashed her gallbladder when she was pregnant with him. I had it done laproscopicly (sp?) they did tell me that they would only do hack and slash (ie the big scar down your stomach) if there were major complications. I had a big artery wrapped right around my bile duct and I still only had 3 small incisions the biggest was at my belly button. Recovery is pretty good too. had my surgery last week of august and was able to start school on time the next week.

sorry this is kind of long but hope it helps!!

Sarah
