English teachers, would you consider a musician a poet?

My teacher asked us to find a poem we like

I want to choose one of the lyrics by the lead singers of this group i really like
he basically IS a poet
I mean, before he started his career as a musician, he wrote poems and submitted them and stuff
and he is an english grad...i dont even knw if that matters but for whats its worth...
could i choose one of his song lyrics as a poem, will my teacher count it?
