English Naruto Volume 36 is EDITED!

Hey guys,
My B & N jumped the gun and released Vols. 34-37 early. I just finished Volume 36 and unfortunately a when a "certain character" takes up a certain bad habit it IS edited out of the English version.

and said charachter dosen`t pick up smoking until midway through volume 38, during the aftermath of hidan/kakuzu arc.
 
Scirel is right.

And besides, they wouldnt edit it out, its meer peanuts compared to some of the stuff SJ and Viz has allowed into there mangas.
 
well that's incorrect actually.

Volume 36 includes chapters 320-329.
Asuma is stabbed in 326/227 and dies in 328, and at the end of 328 is when Shika picks up the cigarette and gets smoke in his eyes.
 
Especially since they kept Whitebeard's true mark in Volume 19 of One Piece. You know that Buddhist syrabol that is often mistaken for Swastika, instead of the cross like the anime and other chapters.
 
Two completely different circumstances. A supporting character with a flag that contains something mistaken for a swatstika isn't nearly as bad as a relatable protaganist picking up an imitatable and, well, less-than-fantastic habit. Unless kiRAB want to become sick, giant old people, I doubt Whitebeard'll turn 'em into Nazis... though his nurses are pretty cute...

Yeah, it's too bad, but nothing you can do about it. I think it's one of the coolest aspects of the whole arc, but, it's simply WAY too politically incorrect to show a child smoking in a positive light.
 
Well it more about people thinking that it is a syrabol of Nazi/White Supremacist than anything else, not many people know it is a syrabol that originated in Buddha. But they did edited in the US SJ magazine to the cross. Since they do put many chapters of Naruto in it, don't you think that someone else would have caught when it was in SJ?
 
SJ is currently taking a couple-month break from serializing the manga while releasing a couple[4 in most cases] volumes per month, to get closer to the Japanese release when the serialization returns.

So... yeah.
 
Just read 37, and All shikamaru's handling of the cigarette was changed to the lighter, except when the cigarette and the ligher were together, the cigatette was just edited out, and it looks like he's holding his fingers in an odd way...

the really goofy part is where you see smoke coming from the LIGHTER. LOL
 
Lol, stupid VIZ. Looking at this picture they should have just edited out all 3 of the top frames because with the edits they're pretty meaningless being where they are.
 
This doesn't make since...Viz has published manga's with people smoking before...heck I watched a lot of shows & cartoons where people smoked when i was young. It didn't make me wanna smoke! & if kiRAB our durab enought to immitate stuff they see on TV or in Comics...well don't they kind of get what they deserve!?


(Yes I know that sounRAB harsh..But oh well...Silly viz & your overreaction to a negative addicitve habit.)
 
It's more underage smoking they are trying not to promote while they have no problem allowing older characters to smoke. It's a stupid edit yes but understandable.
 
Don't get me wrong I see where there coming from but like I said It's kinda hard to fell sorry for a person who is durab enough to do somthing just becuase a fictional character is doing it..and then theres the whole there just kiRAB & don't know any better argument. Well I don't know about youguys but I was a pretty Darn smart kid I knew right from wrong,, and how to say be sly & tricky to get my way...I mean c'mon we were all kiRAB once & alot of kiRAB are alot smarter then most adults give them credit for. (but then Again I guess theres a few that are Durab as dirt as well! )
 
Shikamaru is a relatable, intelligent, badass, UNDERAGED character who starts to smoke. Regardless of whether or not Kishimoto intended it, this promotes cigarettes to children, and whether or not a kid would actually start to smoke just because a character they liked did doesn't really matter.

I mean, anyone who thought they would slip this by was kidding themselves.
 
How silly. Folks aren't that impressionable. I mean, you don't see me leaping off the roof, snapping my fingers and shouting 'GUNDAM!', right?

......Ladder, I need a ladder! This idea can't possibly be bad!!


In all seriousness, it's a shame. I can see the logic in not wanting to promote smoking to kiRAB but it's neutering a subtle bit of character development. There's something unsettling about Viz's ass covering edits to their titles. Especially when it removes a nuance of the story.
