english language beginner. What book will tell me about the history of english language?

I'm looking for a book for beginners (i'm 17) about the history of the english language. I have trouble understanding history (it's so confusing).

Is there a good book for beginners (who know nothing about it) that will give a thorough and easy to understand history of the english language and won't cost a lot?
 
The Adventure of English by Melvynn Bragg.
Comprehensive, interesting and entertaining.
Would be cheapest to borrow from your library.
