English homework, I need help with author's tone...?

I need to write a paragraph on Nathaniel Hawthorne's tone on the first chapter of the Scarlet Letter. Tone is made up of three things: Imagery, Diction, and Detail. I understand diction and imagery, but how do I explain how he used Details to craft a gloomy, dismal, and depressing tone? I'm not exactly sure what Details in writing are, I confuse it with imagery. Help, please???
 
You could use some of the detail on how he describes the door, or the rose bush. He says something about how the door looks more antique than anything else in the new wworld then more DETAILS about the rust, and what's around the door.
