Engineering degree vs Finance / Economics?

I have to choose which major to pursue this week. I'm stuck between engineering (I will choose my specific engineering program at a later time) or Economics / Finance. Here is my dilemma.

1. I'm a business minded person. I've actually operated a business and plan to in the future but being in NY, I've heard that we're flooded with biz majors. When I look at job ads, I see a lot for businesses though and the salaries are pretty high.

2. I want to join the military as an Officer and technical degrees stand out. This is making me want to do engineering even more, especially since I'm into tech/science stuff.

3. I don't see nearly as many engineering jobs in NY/NJ as I do for finance.

4. I've heard that a lot of engineering/tech jobs are now going to Visa holders, being outsourced, or just plain ol being downsized.

I've heard that if I actually graduate with an engineering degree, from a decent school, most top graduate schools would accept me and let me get a masters in Finance, Economics, or what have you. Is this accurate? This could make me lean towards engineering.

Just need some help. Which one is better overall, as far as job prospects, and income.

Wow, this is a tough one.

I don't know how accurate the outsource thing is, Engineering majors are normally hard to find. Yes there are a lot more business majors but the job growth should be steady.

Now they both can make a lot of money, but business does have a slight edge. Its seriously a coin flip though.

I have a degree in economics-landed a pretty nice job and I am happy with what I am doing. Economics is SO versatile, but I say that engineering can offer many growth opportunities in the future seeing that we will be moving toward new energy saving / changing methods and engineers are always needed-plus you will learn a lot that will allow you to start your own business or consulting job in the future...but that goes w/ economics too so it is really up to your INTERESTS and whether or not you feel like you can stay in one field for the rest of your life or let economics take you where your interests change.

good luck in whatever you choose
