Engine trouble in a jeep liberty?

I started my car today and it was fine. However when I started driving there was a loud whirling sound coming from where the gear shift is. The sound became louder and faster with the faster I would drive. I checked my oil and it was very low. I added 2 quarts but its still making that sound. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

well my friend, my advice to you is that none of our advices here are to be taken for granted without visiting somebody to take a look.
however, not having oil in one of both, the motor or the gear is something devastating..
oil works as a lubricant to prevent direct contact, yet reducing friction between the surface walls of everything moving in ur motor or gear. then imagine ur motor is rotating at 4000 rounds per min (RPM)... that means the pistons are going up and down 8000 times per minutes rubbing the walls of the cylinder in case there is no oil... scaring isn't it. same goes for different applications in gear.
wish u luck man.. Oil is critical.

If it was the engine oil that was that far down, you really need to be checking it far more than you have been. Have someone follow you and tell you if there's blue smoke coming out while you accelerate. In any case, start saving for an engine rebuild, rings & valves at the least.
I assume you have a manual trans, since automatics likely won't shift if they run that low. In any case, check for leaks. If there is a leak, fix it! Also keep an ear out for the return of the whining/grinding type noises whether there's enough oil or not. There is a chance that even in a manual trans the prolonged lack of oil wore down a bearing prematurely.
