Engagement Ring going to Small Claims Court?

My friend was proposed to about 3 months ago, since then they have broken it off. Her ex claims that he can take her to court over the ring. Is this true? (We are in CA) If so, what is the allegation called? What are the chances that she would keep the ring?
 
I'm not sure how CA is set up on this -- but it's basically a breach of implied contract because the ring was given in anticipation of marriage.

It may depend on who called off the wedding and/or the reason.
 
Anyone can take anyone to Small Claims Court over just about anything.

In many cases, the boyfriend will be able to sue and get the ring back. Unless she can prove he cheated on her or otherwise did something really bad to cause the engagement to be called off, there is a really good chance she will have to give up the ring.

I don't know why anyone would want to keep the ring anyway.
