In every ecosystem, energy is transferred along food chains from one
(1)_________ to the next. But not all the (2)__________ available to organisms at one tropic level can be absorbed by organisms at the next one. In fact, the amount of available energy (3)__________. Some of the available energy goes into growth in (4)__________ and the (5)___________ of offspring. This energy does become available to the (6)___________ tropic level. However, most of the available energy is used up in other ways:

* Some is used up at the first tropic level as a result of (7)__________, which uses up lots of solar energy in making glucose.

* Some is used up in (8)___________, and given off as heat.

* Some is (9)___________, in the form of biological material and heat, through (10)___________.
Some is used for (11)___________ and transport.

All the energy used in these ways (12)___________ to the environment, and is not available to the next tropic level.
