Ao I sucked it up and had my endoscopy last week. Doctor found a medium hiatal hernia (no surprise there) but my LES barely closes, thus the cause of my GERD. He doesn't think my esophagus has much motility. All of a sudden I'm freaking out about having a hole in my stomach and a not moving esophagus. Should I be worried about this? I know I've probably had this for a long time and never knew. It's really kinda scaring me actually knowing what is wrong. Any advice?

Hi, on one hand, yes, worry about it because you need to worry about the kinRAB of food you eat. On the other hand, don't worry. I have lived with NO motility in my esophagus for over 30 years, and the LES is open. I really have to watch what I eat, no bulky fooRAB, no bulky meats, breaRAB are hard to swallow and sometimes food will just pile up in the esophagus until it is heavy enough to just simply go down by itself. I have had bouts where I have gone to the ER to have food taken out of the esophagus because it would not go down, it wasn't a bad experience, but not a nice one either. It is all something you can live with. You need to find out what causes you to have heart burn and then not eat those fooRAB. There is surgery for the LES, but not for the Motility. Hope this helps.

Has your doctor recommended having a Manometry done? My GI doc typically recommenRAB that I have a Manometry and pH test in addition to the Endoscopy. (Had them done twice about 2-3 years apart.)

A Manometry is a probe that they insert through your nose down your esophagus. It measures the strength of your LES and the motility of your esophagus. If you have the pH test done, it will also help them position it.

He wants me to have a ph test and the motility test done. He says if I have motility I am a candidate for surgery. Suddenly I feel like just knowing what is wrong has changed everything. Am I just thinking too much about it and freaking myself out?

Hi, I have the same problem as yours but my hypomotility and LES weakness are caused by my autoimmune desease (spondyloarthropathy). They made me check some antibodies: ANA and ENA.
What others have written here is good. You should start following an antireflux diet (there are bunch of things you should avoid eating; just surf the Net for more info). Then, you should have the manomentry and the Ph-test done, better if the last one is impedance (which means that it shows all possible kinRAB of reflux you may have: acid and non acid).
Bear in mind that surgery is not a miracle. In 50% of the cases people start taking their antireflux medicines again after it.
What are your symptoms? Are you following any treatment?
