Employment Confirmation from Twenty Years Ago?

Straight out of high school I went to work with Company A (1980). In 1988, Company B merged with Company A. The department I worked in was spared but other departments were shut down and soon after the lay-offs began. I was laid-off in the first round, as the company practiced the seniority rule (last one in, first one out). In 1996, via an acquisition, Company C took over Company B.

The purpose of my little history lesson is to show what's happened with Company A since 1988 when I was laid-off. As of late, several manufacturing companies have either relocated or decided to build manufacturing plants in the area. Most of the new companies require applicants to have a minimum of two years experience in a manufacturing environment. I have five years experience in manufacturing, but am worried that there will be no one to verify the fact.

What are the chances that my employment records are still on file in the plant from twenty years ago? One possible thing I do have going for me is the fact that the company I am applying to is in the same medium sized town where aIl these mergers and acquisitions have taken place, but it still doesn't prove I worked there. If my employment records can't be confirmed (through Company C I would guess) is there any other way I can prove employment? Thanks.
