Employee called in sick to work on new years eve, actually sick or faking it?

I work for my dads restaraunt and we hired a new employee and he was scheduled for his second day of training on dec 31 2010 at 430pm but called in sick 5 minutes before he was supposed to show up. Do you think he was actually sick? Or just calling in sick to go and party? I think he faked it so he could party. My dad wants to give him another chance but if he isn't serious then I don't think he should have a job...what do you all think? And what would you do?
