Empire Strikes Back SE-Emporer Palpatine

I'm pretty sure Carrie Fisher did some script doctoring on AOTC. Lucas' main problem was keeping the film to his standard 2 and a bit hours because he had to fit a massive story into a short space of time. It might have worked better had he had help with the dialogue (I can't stand it when Obi-Wan keeps saying"...my young padawan" or "...my very young apprentice").

My son is massively into Star Wars so I've seen all the prequel trilogy about 20 times each over the last couple of weeks and I have to say that TPM is very, very good. ROTS is not as bad as I remember, it just needed tweaks - less CGI, Padme dying properly etc. to make it a great films. As for AOTC - it's not all bad, but there's no relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin to get into so Anakin just comes across as a moaning nonce. The love story feels rushed, the creatures in the arena at the end are crap (why not use a Rancor!?) and there's too much CGI.

IMO the effects on BSG demonstrate perfectly where GL went wrong with the CGI on the new star wars films. The limitations of the effects on the original SW films created a realism and personality that BSG has managed to recreate through the use of camerawork, authentic physics, and battered looking ships. All these things are missing from the new SW films where GL seemed to go for more ships, bigger ships, and sleeker ships, which, although visually impressive, seem devoid of personality and are oddly inhuman. I suspect that it is largely due to the BSG producers having to concentrate on what they could achieve within a limited budget as opposed to GL's money is no object approach.

I bought the Recent release of DVD's purely for the original cinematic versions. Thus far The dvd's with the most recent versions have not been watched whilst Disk 2 of each, with the real version has been well used.

As for the Prequels, Phantom Menace was just boring, Clones was awful and Sith was ok upto the last 5 minutes which ruined the whole film.

The choices for Anakin, An annoying kid I can't stand and a Guy who couldn't act to save his life. The scene in clones where he kills them all in the same tone of voice as he professes his Love for Padme...

Then the ultimate kick in the Nuts, Darth Vader, the ultimate movie bad guy, his first worRAB, "Is Padme alright?" Totally ruined it for me.

The ultimate movie bad guy, who gave his life to save his son. He's no bad guy.

As for the original versions of the original trilogy being better than the re-done ones - ha! The special editions are far superior is almost every way. He didn't go far enough though, he neeRAB to re-do all the space battles, the rancor sequence, the speeder bikes and a few other bits and pieces. The only thing I want changed is Greedo shooting first. Just wrong.

That would be horrible, Star Wars should never, ever be remade, you just can't improve on a classic, the best thing he can do is improve the effects on the films he already did, which he of course is doing.

...of course, the somewhat "crappy" effects of the 70's are endearing to some and they think it should be left alone. I like the idea on improving on the special effects, such as the Death Star explosion and lightsaber effects definately.

...and George will forever from now on try to combine both the original and prequel trilogies by adding ships, special effects and aliens seen in the prequel trilogy, in the original trilogy.

If it were just stuff like that, I'd be cool with the tweaking. I'm more than happy with the colour correction, neatening of laser/spaceship effects, the addition of windows to Cloud City, and even the Palpatine/Anakin reshoots, but the horrible cartoony CGI aliens added to ANH, Greedo shooting first and the eyewateringly embarrassing song routine added to Jedi cross a line, distracting and changing rather than enhancing the experience. Plus, the CGI in those scenes already looks dated in a way physical masks and costumes don't

The awful cartoony CGI creatures doing the 'hilarious' song in Jabba's palace, and the stupid "slapstick" stuff added to Mos Eisley can sod off, too.

I agree, I cringe at the Jedi dance thing...is that really necessary? I really don't mind the Greedo thing...I really don't, it doesn't bother me, but it doe smake him look le stupid missing the Han at point blank range...

The Palpatine reshoot was genius, as Ian McDiarmid IS the Emperor and that original scene in the original "Empire Strikes Back" clashes with the rest of the series.

WTF??? I think that some of the effects in the original trilogy are waaaay better than the newer CGI effects. In particular, the ships feel more tangible and still look very good by todays standarRAB....I suppose that's because they used real models back in the 70's / 80's.

The new CGI may be incredibly detailed, but how much depth is there really....?

The casting of Christensen as Skywalker/Vader is the biggest mistake in cinema history imo. Portman as Leia's old budge wasn't too clever either. Phantom Menace is tedious. The pod-race looked good but would anyone have really cared if the Skywalker brat had rolled his pod and ended up as Banter-fodder?
I better stop now or I'll be here all night.

On watching Sith yesterday for the 11th time this week, it dawned on me how angry I get when the Emporer takes out the three Jedi's accompanying Mace to arrest him. For 3 of the top Jedis in the order to be taken down by an old, talentless (with a saber) moron so easily is pure nonsense and it never fails to rile me. Had there been a longer runnign time, I'm sure there would have been a great face off between them all but, alas, we get GL at his very worst (just like when Obi-Wan took down Maul by jumping over his head!).

I actually think Portman was very good, it was just her dialogue at times was so awful that she suffered with it. TPM is really enjoyable I think - starts off with sabers, introduces the Jedi council, starts the whole ball rolling of the Emporers plans, the Maul/Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fight, the pod race, Jabba...there's load to like.
