Empire Strikes Back SE-Emporer Palpatine

Watching this on ITV last night, I was waiting for the extended scene where Vader communicates with the Emporer, (outside the asteroid field),
- only to be surprised that it still had the 1980 version of a less menacing and chilled out Emporer.
Im POSITIVE Ive seen a version where the Ian Mc Diarmid Emporer appears, (in re-shot footage) as the later (ROTJ/EP 1/ 2/ 3 ) Emporer-
or have i just dreamt this?
HELP I think im going crazy?:eek:

Yeah, if you're just thinking about the technology, which is what Lucas was doing during the prequels (particularly the last two) you're not going to make great films. The same goes for the Matrix sequels.

The biggest mistake Lucas made was writing and directing Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. I was OK with him doing The Phantom Menace 'cause that reflected him writing and directing A New Hope all those years ago. In retrospect Phantom Menace feels like the best of the prequel trilogy to me (I NEVER thought I'd be thinking that now, at the time I thought thinks couldn't get worse but boy DID they!)

But other writers and directors were involved with Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. That's what should have happened with AOTC and ROTS. Both movies feel so sterile and dull. At least TPM has some fun to it, and two amazing sequences in the pod race and, of course, the still brilliant Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon/Darth Maul duel (CG Yoda jumping around doesn't beat this, neither does the overblown Anakin/Obi-Wan showdown in ROTS which should have been more intense but again relied far too much on CG)

The versions broadcast on ITV were the 1997 Special editions. The reshot Palpatine scene was one of the many extra changes made for the 2004 DVD releases. Sebastian Shaw is still the ghost of Anakin in Jedi in the 1997 SE versions (and so the ITV versions) too.

Whilst TPM has the most car-crash embarrassingly bad moments in it, I wholeheartedly agree. It the only prequel that feels at all like Star Wars in retrospect, and that hangs together on repeat viewings. Clones is just soul destroying.

here's something I was thinking about while watching this.

There is the rule of two with the Sith a Master and an Apprentice so if the Emporer wants Luke then that means Vader will have to go.

Also at one point there was Dooku, Emporer and Darth Maul as Sith, along with Vader coming along in Eps 1-III so that means there were more than two Sith at a time

Take that back!!!

Actually, it should be the other way round: He should take the prequels and get rid of all the CGI crap. Replace them with real sets, real locations, etc...

I remember a while back reading an interview with George Lucas in which he said that he planned to release the saga on Blu Ray. So he may not be finished with the tinkering just yet.

Pretty much - although does Vader know about the 'Rule of Two'? Either way, it seems obvious that Vader and Palpatine want to screw each other over (ref - Vaders comments about "together we could defeat the Emperor" in ESB).There are only two Sith... That does not preclude others who have fallen to the Dark Side. Dark/Fallen Jedi are not Sith per se. Dooku did not become Darth Tyranus until Maul was dead. Skywalker did not become Darth Vader until Tyranus was dead. And Assaj Ventress (Clone Wars) never became a Sith.

Having said that, Dooku was not recruited by Palpatine until 32 BBY - after Maul's death.

EDIT: I'm, frankly, ashamed of that post. :o

Thanks for the info!:)
I didnt realise there were different versions released on dvd- i just thought the originals and special editions from the 90s existed!-I can sleep better now!:)

Episode 1 - Darth Maul who was killed by Obi Wan

Episode 2 - Sometime before the events of Episode 2 Sidious recruited Dooku and made him Lord Tyranus, BUT also set the wheels in motion to get ready to convert Anakin when Dooku bit the dust with the little pep talk before Anakin left for Naboo with Padme

Episode 3 - Dooku was killed by Anakin on the orders of Palpatine and soon afterwarRAB turned Anakin into the new Sith apprentice when Anakin turned on Mace and the Jedi by helping Sidious kill Mace

Then we move to the events sometime BEFORE Episode 5 when Palpatine sensed that maybe Vader was about to turn on him so was going to turn Luke, so Luke would kill Vader and take his father's place at Sidious's side.

Luckily Vader restored the balance of the Force by destroying the Sith (Sidious and himself) before Luke could be destroyed by Sidious after rejecting the dark side of the Force by not killing Vader

you will probably find that next time they are shown on itv they may be the 2004 dvd releases as they are the ones that were shown on sky last.

have to say I agree that AOTC and ROTS needed more than just Lucas on them as he can't write dialogue at all so really needed help there. Liked the nice touch that Natalie POrtman had the Princess Leia hair cut in ROTS though.

Never been a fan of Phantom Menance and wished they had started with AOTC with a better title and then done more story after Annakin became Vader

The reason you didn't realise was there is only one version of the SE on DVD which is the later version, the earlier 1997 SE were on VHS.

Ive been racking my brains trying to think HOW Ive seen the "new" Empire... without ever owning it, (or even knowing it existed!)
Then i realised, I rented it from the library a while back, thinking it was the SE.
So, there are THREE versions of each film in total?
1-The Original
2-The Special Editions
and 3- the DVD remasters?
What changes were made/added to the RE-re- release's as opposed to the SE?s

BTW-i've got an idea how Lucas can get back in favour with the fans...
He should REMAKE the original trilogy using TODAYS sp fx.
Imagine how great it would look then?

Why are ITV even showing te 1997 versions...it makes them look stupid, might as well show the most recent and the versions of the films considered "final" by Lucas...unless he plans on (...and trust me folks, it's coming) re-releasing them again with even more changes.

There are certainly some things I'd still wanna see corrected from the 2004 version...not to mention CGI Yoda in The Phantom Menace please...I mean, that Yoda puppet...what the actual hell, lol!
