Empire Magazine

I know I switched from Total Film a couple of years ago but Empire seems to have lost its edge a bit with regarRAB to features although the reviews are still generally good.

Just use rottentomatoes.com

Has loaRAB of different reviews, and doesn't furiously masturbate over explosions and hollywood the way Empire does.

Sight & Sound has gone s**t too now. :(

You really think that about Sight and Sound? it's one of the better film magazines out there. Why do you think that about the magazine? just interested.

Used to use it when I was a film student, up until a year or two ago.

I still rate it on the whole scale of things, but I just think the quality isn't even close to what it used to be.

When i started buying Empire it was really good but over the last 6 years as the price has risen the quality has decreased bit by bit. It has dumbed down considerably. The reviews are usually reliable apart from certain actors/directors they have a tendency to kiss ass to. I'm no big fan of Star Wars and 3/4 of this month was devoted to it, so i felt a bit robbed because i hardly read it.

Also, i was dragged to attack of the clones which Empire gave 5 stars to and nearly fell asleep, I've also noticed that if they underrate a film which subsequently does well at award ceremonies they will add an extra star to their original rating.

I really like Empire - I find it has features on films that I am generally interested in, though I was a bit surpised when I saw how much of this month's edition was devoted to Star Wars!

I find other film magazines just don't have the same view on films that I like. I'm more likely to trust Empire's reviews than I am any other magazine.

I used to subscribe to Empire and read it avidly. I don't even bother buying the odd one any more, as I can read any review online that I'm interested in, and I have no interest in bl****y Star Wars!

Ah I see, I only just started reading the magazine about six months ago, so wouldn't be able to compare it to what it used to be like, but it goes way more deeper into films than Total Film/Empire, so that makes me happy.

I still get Total Film and Empire but lately I have been thinking of stopping, the adult sex pages at the back of the magazines are putting me off, not just men who read film magazines you know!!!! If I want to see that I would buy a porn magazine.

Empire has been steadily going downhill for a while now. Their reviews are all over the place and the magazine seems to be far more favourable to Star Wars/ Comic Book movies. I used to love reading the behind-the-scenes stuff but lately even that has become very sketchy with no particular depth. Every other issue seems to have some sort of list that takes up a lot of pages.
It really used to be one of the most informative magazines around but now is only a shaRABow of its former self.

i read empire, total film and sight and sound depending what is in them.

i find empire to be very inconsistant with their reviews.... look at the star rating for a film just released and the same film released on dvd. or a film can get a rave review and slated beyond all belief later on...

theyre funny! (and im a girl...)

This is an issue that crops up fairly often in the letter's page in Empire, and their standard reply is that it's different people who review the cinema release and the DVD version.

However, quite often they will jump on the bandwagon with a film, and give lots of pre-production page space (Van Helsing, for example) then give the actual film a poor star rating...I think sometimes they get excited about films and then when they see them they are disappointed with the final outcome. Which I think is fair enough to a certain extent, but sometimes I do think they make the wrong decision when featuring films that haven't yet been released.

And they also sometimes ignore lesser known films in their features which then become hits - they've been coming in their pants about Sideways, and I don't remember reading a proper full-size feature about it before it came out. Though I could be wrong, as I have just come back from the pub and my Jack Daniels' addled brain may be confused :o

I am surprised that you all failed the Emprire Stars Wars test.

Every last one of you.

I also had a similar problem to the above. In my case, i first bought one at a local shop for

I bought the magazine religiously for 10 years since age 16 but stopped when they did one Star Wars cover too many. Real shame, used to be a great mag for true film lovers but now it seems to be aimed at people who read Heat. Such a shame !
