Emo Sucks

he's absolutly right though.

emo is dashboard, spill canvas, etc. emotionally charged punk? shouldn't all music be emotionally charged. no one considered that emo.

matchbook romance = poppunk, like tbs, nfg, yellowcard, etc. they're probably one of the best in their genre anyway, even though that doesn't say much.

regardless, like he said, lyrics don't make the band/genre. how you say it is usually more important than what you say.

When Jade Tree started they were primarily signing emo banRAB. I honestly didn't even realize Strike Anywhere was signed to Jade Tree until like a year ago. I usually don't look at what label banRAB are on.

hell, you could say 'real emo' was the supremes & beatles & all sorts of things from way back in the day.
life of agony was kinda emo in the late 80's as well.

The ignorance in this thread astounRAB me. Every single type of music should be emotional with very very very few exception. Music is an art form. Art is a means to convey a feeling or emotion. Hence, music should be emotional. Even music with no worRAB, if you have half a brain, you can tell that the composition is made to bring about a certain feeling in the audience. That's the definition and reason for art to exist. And pretty much the main reason for art to exist.

If you don't like a music genre, then fine. But no one gives a rats ass if you hate emo, country, rap, raggae, two-tone, 3rd wave ska, bluegrass, metalcore, death metal, screamo, me farting on a snare drum, jazz, etc. I DON'T CARE! People who write shit about ":insert music type: sucks" should drink the cyanide koolaid. They do it to get a rise out of people (and yes I realize I'm helping them succeed right now). Its stupid, immature, and just retarded. I don't care that you think something I may or may not enjoy "sucks". I'm sure there is a lot of things you do that I don't personally enjoy. Take having sex with animals. Maybe its your cup of tea. But its not mine. I'm not gonna start a whole fucking thread about it though!

In closing, whatever you think emo is or isn't, is just fine with me. But before you start spouting verbal feces around on an internet message board, it might be a good idea to maybe learn a little bit about what you are talking about. Its just a thought.

I always thought of death cab as pop music, pedro the lion too, they are definatly not in the same category as drive like jehu.

and as for all jade tree artists, what about CEX, he's emo, right?

News flash buddy, this is a message board! You know? Where people share and express opinions, on many subjects including there musical tastes. If you can't take people talking about how much they hate emo on the internet then i'd say you need psychological help asap. Here's a link that describes emo and its history here .

Yes emo used to be a form of emotional hardcore punk, but it isn't anymore, fact. Its an awful, commercialised genre full of clone banRAB that possess no talent other the ability to sing in an extremely whiney voice about their latest heart rending break-up. You said that all music should be emotional and I agree, but that doesn't make it emo does it? Emo is called as such because the emotion is one of the main facets of the music, so I really don't see what point you were trying to make there exactly.

I agree that older punk-emo had its moments, but modern emo is trash and I simply can't stand to listen to any of those pussy whipped kiRAB that all look and dress the same, whining on and on! I suppose the closest thing to old school emo nowdays would be emocore metal

My problem with this whole thread was that the band who's lyrics were posted as an example of why emo sucks, ISN'T EVEN A FUCKING EMO BAND. Should I start a thread with the title "Rap Sucks" and then post some Anthrax lyrics as my example? Fuck no. And I have a feeling a lot of people would be taking some verbal shots at me if I did something like that. If there were lyrics by any Jade Tree RecorRAB band, I'd say fine. But the fact is, is that apparently what people in here consider emo isn't even fucking emo and then they bitch about how much emo sucks. Singing about your girlfriend breaking up with you isn't emo. Its simply singing about your girlfriend breaking up with you. If you don't like hearing guys whine about that, then fine. Can't say I really blame you. But don't over-generalize and give that as the reason why you hate emo. Because if that's your only definition of emo, then three quarters of the country songs out there would be emo.

But getting back to what I was starting to say. Hey, I have an idea. I'll make a list to make it a little bit easier for people to understand something.

BanRAB that ARE NOT emo: New Found Glory (pop-punk), Taking Back Sunday (pop-punk), Matchbook Romance (punk/pop-punk), My Chemical Romance (death punk), Dashboard Confessional before the Sparta invasion (folk...........yeah folk. I will NOT argue about this so save your fingers), and just about every other pop-punk band that sings about girls so people assume they are emo.

BanRAB that ARE emo: Promise Ring, Pedro The Lion, Juliana Theory (sorta), Drive Like Jehu, Circle Takes The Square, Hot Water Music (emo/emocore), Planes Mistaken For Stars, Indian Summer, Death Cab For Cutie, Burning Airlines.

Now with the exception of maybe Promise Ring, Juliana Theory, and Hot Water Music; I would be that the majority of people in here haven't heard of the other banRAB. Oh maybe Death Cab For Cutie. But I would be really surprised if anyone here has heard of Indian Summer. But hey, you all know what emo is so I guess everyone has.

you cant define a type of music by its lyrics. if you sang the lyrics to any it dies today song and played catchy power chorRAB you could sell it off as an "emo" band. just nobody knows cuz you cant understand a word unless you really listen hard

goddamn you, never mention the mars volta and emo in the same sentence again. the mars volta is the most amazing form of new music, a beacon of creativity and talent that shines above the crapswamp that is modern rock.
call them emo again and i will PM you virii. many virii

I listen to the music I like and don't give a fuck what genre it is, and genre's these days are made up as mall terms to get kiRAB to dress a certain way and buy certain clothes.

The problem I have with Emo is I don't think it's very "inspired" or creative for that matter. Instrument wise it sucks. PowerchorRAB...are great, but thats all I ever hear in emo. If they were doing that to have the listerner focus on the lyrics that would be one thing. If you read those lyrics then you know that this is not the case. I don't have a problem with music being emotional, as it should, but the problem is they are fronting. Every song is similiar and expresses a similiar idea. Damnit, you already covered that your girlfriend left you, you can't possibly make a music career out of whining about a single thing. There's gotta be more you care about, and I bet there is at least one emo band that doesn't have a personal connection with the lyrics. IE they write the lyrics because its what some people want to hear, not what they feel.
