Emerging dilemma...

Yeah, as you likely know my 10r is gen 2. Yours is gen 1 and had some stability issues overall in comparison to gen 2 (from what I have read). My 10r is amazingly stable at speed. I must say I am really impressed with how smooth and stable the thing is. Every bit as capable and fast as gen1, but apparently more refined overall. I really enjoy riding the thing and will avoid parting with it at this point for sure. If I got the right price for it, maybe...

Regardless of what I buy (848 or 1198) I will keep both bikes on the road for the summer just for fun. Then in the fall I probably won't insure the 10r at all. Most articles and things that I have read seem to be consistent with the idea that the 848 is a stable girl.

I really appreciate your perspective on things, as we clearly have very similar situations :-)

Thanks for that..

Cheers

This is not a concern. In my market my level of experience, age, and CCs remains no problem. I pay 750 a year on my 10r currently. This may sound like a lot compared to some markets in the US but up here this is dirt cheap.

Cheers

Nah,

I'm looking at $740 a year here in NYC, so it's not a shocker. Didn't really consider the 1198 cause it's a monopost. Gotta justify it to the wife somehow.

I have never ridden a 10/1198 but I thought a lot of folks on here and other places I've heard were saying the bigger bike is just overkill on the street. I guess it depends for everyone, but I doubt many people ever use the 1098 to it's full capacity on the street. I'm sure you know the 848 is a little easier in traffic with the wet clutch. I understand economics though, hard to turn down an 1198 for $2800 more.

+1 on never having head shake with the 848, then again I don't torque it around too much on the street. Haven't been to the track yet

Not that I want to add confusion but I thing you are making the wrong choice by buying an 848 or 1098 for the street and dedicate your ZX10R for the track.
The Ducati IS a track bike. That's were it belongs!
the ZX10R is much more confortable on the street than the 848 or 1098.
I started with an 848 on the street and now converted it to track use only. My street bike is an Hypermotard, that's fun!

I should point out that when i had the head shake it was the only one i have ever had. I think i was just accelerating hard and turned the bars with almost no weight on the front tire. Either way, it scared the holy crap out of me. So, i decided to go with the 1098s.

Well I just sold my 2006 ZX10r to buy the new 1198s. I have never ridden a twin either so I know how you feel. Things I liked about my zx10: gloss black all the way, good accelaration and smooth, easy to maintain as I never had one problem with her, it's a "ninja"!. Things I didn't like about my zx10: A bit bulky and piggish (not like the newer 08/09 zx10). Very wide across the seat (they fixed this with the 08/09 zx10) and while it turns ok, not nearly as nimble in turns as the zx636 I had before it (to be expected). I've had the ducati for over a month now and still haven't ridden it! Snow here is just melting so I am hoping I can get out on it this weekend or next and I can give you my impressions. What I do know is the duc is obviously much sexier, the bike feels lighter and is actually more comforatable to me (6 foot tall 185lbs), and the seat is narrower (which is nice). The fairings are a little easier to remove. The seat is a hell of a lot thinner, but doesn't really bother me as I just hated straddling the wide zx10 seat. I am a little nervouse as I sold my baby to get this new bike so hopefully she won't dissapoint and will be at least a little reliable. I'll give you a comparo in a week or so when I can actually compare the engines!

If I had the funds having both would be the best!

Comming off the 636 to the 10 it is hard to give up the low end torque once you have it!
