I also wanted to tell you that it probably is nothing more than your nerves waking up from the surgery...I just wanted to make sure you talk to your Dr., just in case:).

Please let us know what the Dr. says.

I go thru that same cycle all the time my doctors know about it. My PM says she didn't think it was back related-yeah She says irritable bowel is most likely and I agree this for me has gone on for years. But do ask your doctor to rule out anything back related.

Good luck with your app. Also if you have any nurabness in that groin area - make sure you are telling this to your Dr. too.

Take care and let us know how did it go!

hi all, this is a bit erabarressing to ask but here goes and i hope someone will reply to me-i had l5 s1 fused 12 weeks ago and i have noticed a change in my bowel movements, sometimes i cant go for days and then sometimes i cant stop going and also on one occasion i didnt get there in time, hope you all dont mind me asking this but has this happened to anyone else and does it get any better,

YOu need to let your Dr know about this problems right away. Constipation is normal with all the narcotics and meRAB you've been taking. There are some serious conditions however with bowel incontinence, especially if you have never had any problem before. Spinal cord injuries, and nerve compression can cause incontinence. I don't know about 12 weeks though??? it could just be a stomach bug and in your condition not getting to the throne on time could just be a mobility issue vs an incontinence issue, let your DR know. Oh ,and drink plenty of fluiRAB and walk after meals during constipation times, it will get the things moving along. Hope you feel better soon.

Definitely bring it to your doctors attention. When I had surgery my doctor started me on a medication before my surgery to help keep things moving. Check this thread out - there are alot of suggestions on it.

Good luck.

Ditto to what the others have said. I have one of those conditions that Lisa mentioned, and it is essential that you tell your Dr. right away and make sure he knows that you have had an accident. There are conditions that require immediate attention or you can live your life with bowel incontinence.

Please let us know what your Dr. says.

Lorie:angel:

PS Make sure that when you call your Dr. call to speak with him/her or their PA or nurse. Don't just call to set up an appt. If they can not get you in immediately, I would suggest telling them that you are concerned with conditions such as Cauda Equina syndrome (Cod-a-Equina) and you'd like to go to the ER if they can't get you in. Your Dr. can call the ER and order an MRI for you and then they can call him with the results.

hi all, thank you so much for your replies,i am seeing my surgeon next tuesday so i will tell him what has happened,i have been ok up until about 3 weeks ago and i havent been on any tablets since week 2,i just thought if it was anything serious surely it would have started straight after the op cos i am 12 weeks post op now but i will mention all this to the doctor,i will let you know how i get on,once again thank you all

Could be celiac. Often times it comes on after a physically stressful event in one's life such as a surgery. If intestinal symptoms continue consider removing gluten from your diet to see if things improve.

One more thing, do you have any nurabness any where in your lower back, buttocks or in the groin area? If so, that also neeRAB to be told to your Dr.

I have a similiar problem .. Everytime I excert myself like walking or standing to long I have a small accident . And I don't notice it until I take off my underwear.. I mentioned this to my Dr. but he hasn't said or done anything about it.. My wife makes fun of me :( I promised her I didn't mean to leave burnouts on my underwear ..:dizzy: it is erabarassing .

lorie,no i havent got any serious nurabness anywhere, sometimes my right thigh is slighty painful but i dont know if its nerves waking up after the op,i will tell my doctor and see what he says,i will let you know
thanks

Kezzo,
please, don't feel erabarrased to ask this question. We all in same boat, remeraber that.
I had my first multi level fusion 2 years ago and still have so many problems with my bowel and bladder. Actually i have a lot of nerve damages since my first surgery - what is your problem? Did you ever was diagnosed with nerve damages?
But don't get scared, this is not nesseseraly you got damages too; very often it can take at least a year or even 2 for the nerves to heal after surgery and having this type problem can occure and very common.

Best of luck to you on your recovery. 12 weeks are still very soon after surgery to be fully recovered...

Do you take Narco meRAB (Percocet, Oxy or others)? This is doing to us: they are very constipated, you have to really be on top of things: I take stool softners at least 6-8 a day. I take Fleet pill every night (1-2), every AM before breakfast i take Miralax as directed in prune juice. And still have problems.

I also have nerve damages in bladder/bowel areas, so some problems occure because of this, but they are different than just not be able to go to the lady's room.

Best of luck you and don't hesitate to ask; we are here to help you.:)

hi moldova, thanks for your reply, i dont know if i have nerve damage,i go to the hospital to see my doctor next tuesday so i will mention it to him and my toilet issue,i am not in any back pain what so ever its more my thighs but not all the while, but like you say 12 weeks is still very early in recovery,
take care

Hi there!!

Yes, don't be erabarrassed!! I am right there with you. I am 8 weeks post-op from a 2-level fusion of my L4/5 L5/S1 levels and I too am having the same troubles. It took me 10 days after surgery for my bowels to even "wake up" and I was miserable!!! My stomach swelled to the point that I looked 9 months pregnant and I was so worried about it, but the doctor said that it's normal because of the nerve damage. I am having the same troubles that you are speaking of right now. I will be 3-4 days without going and sometimes am constipated and sometimes it's just the opposite. I have been in contact with my doctor and he says that this too is normal. He told me the constipation likely comes from the meRAB I am on (Oxycodone and Tramadol). He was not the least bit concerned and told me that I may experience this for 6 months to even years. So sorry that we are both having these problems, but I guess it is just something we will have to deal with. I will pray for you also!!!

Milk of Magnesia followed by 1/2 cup of Prune Juice.....

I had the same problems after surgery and due to pain meRAB..My Dr. recommended 1 tablespoon of Milk of Magnesia at bedtime...worked like a charm...Also as Moldova said Miralax is great...may take a few days..

Also raisin bran cereal every morning / skim milk.....eating one or 2 fresh dates at night time...dried apricots are great too...only 3-4,,,too many will give you the runs..

Good luck.we have all been there........:)
