email not working since last update

I assume my phone (g1) got an update because it looks different now. I never saw it but one morning it was different. Now my email (not the gmail app) will not open. It says the program is not responding and force closes. It does seem to be working somewhat and notifies me if I get email on one of the accounts most of the time but I cannot see a list of the email accounts or open it myself. I can only view email when it notifies me and then I can only use that one account. I have looked for solutions to this but have found nothing so far. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? I would really like to get it working without having to reset the phone. Thanks!

There are two types of updates. OS and App. OS updates you can't really miss as they take several minutes and you see some huge screens informing you of the update process. App update you have to initiate yourself from the Market, so you should know about this too if you've updated your email or K9 or whatever app.

You say your phone "looks different". How? What's changed?

it was definitely an os update and i did miss it. my battery died and when i tried to turn it on it took forever so i set it down and left. hours later when i picked it up it was different and the email app did not work properly. the camera app looks different, some menus are white, icons are different, more info about the battery. i am sure it was an update because i did not ever update since cupcake and now i have version 1.6. the problem is that as soon as this happened the email app stopped working.

Which email app? The one that comes with the phone (calle Email)? GMail? K9?

What happens when you run it? What is the error message?

the email one, not gmail or anything downloaded. it won't even open. i get a black screen and then it says "the application Email (process com.android.email) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again

Force Close

I suggest you try resetting the data in the application. You will lose any emails that are only stored on the phone, and all of your email settings though, but at least it may fix it.

To do this go to your home screen and press Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Email. Click the Clear Data and the Clear Cache buttons, then try going back into your Email app.

I had the same thing happen with my g1, battery dieing, update, and my gmail not working. Its been driving me crazy for a couple days now. Did what extorian said and now life is good.
Thanks!!

And thanks for coming back to let us all know this. In most cases if one person has a problem then hundreds of other do too who just use Google and find threads like this. So it's good to know it worked. It saves people wiping all their email data unnecessarily.

am having the same issue on my nexus one. started last night and no updates (os or app) had been applied. to make things worse, the application is not showing up in the manage applications settings. as previously mentioned, it is partially usable as it receives new messages, just force closes whenever opening a message.

is email app reinstallable individually? i didnt see it in the market.

Recently had the same issue, email hasn't been working for a few weeks now, saw this post and the above fix worked. Thanks the posting the info.
