I am considering purchasing an elliptical machine in the 1500$ range. I just got done with surgery nuraber 4 which is the first surgery that just took it out of me. I want to build up the lower back and legs in a impact free and pain free way. I am weaker then I have ever been been and need increased lower back/leg and neck strength.
My inquiry is: has anyone used a Elliptical machine as a large part of their post surgery rehab process with decent results? Especially after muscle or nerve atrophy or impingement? Hope I am using these posts right, thanks from Jacksonville, Fl.

The elliptical may or may not help you. The most important thing is to be cleared by your doctor or a physical therapist before you use it. They know you and what surgery you had. Some doctors don't even want a surgery patient to use a regular treadmill until cleared. You definitely don't want to mess up your surgery! Rule of thurab: check with the doc!

I wish you the best in your recovery. Hope this surgery will be the last for you!

Emily,
Thanks for sharing your insights, I really appreciate it. I spoke at some length with my neurosurgeon (and the PT's) about it, and he thought it was a good way to rehab if I had the access. With the usual caveats, stop with any back pain, work a gradual program over a set period with rehabilitation in mind, etc. He had a tennis ending knee injury, and has had good luck using an elliptical machine. He did recommend spending the time doing research, and emphasized going out and trying as many possible machines if I purchase.
My last surgery was a micro endoscopic discectomy for a herniated disc. It caused impingement that started my knee going out. I had never felt that before. Still early, but still weak. Strengthening is the goal.
Thanks for your help.
