Elliott Smith "Either/Or"

Then you are no Elliot Smith fan. You should just give up on yourself.

Nah, I'm joking. XO is good, but I prefer Either/Or just because it is so incredibly raw yet breathtakingly emotional. It is exactly what music should be, and though XO was an amazing album as well, Either/Or hits me on a different level.

Figure 8 doesn't hold up to his other albums for me, its over produced, and all the songs start to sound the same.
It's just Elliott's attempt at a pop album.

Plus I think the other version of pretty mary k is way better

Uh, part of the definition of a demo is that it's acoustic. I dislike the feel of the album version. It has nothing to do with me trying to be cool, I just like the demo version better.

Only one I've heard is "From A Mansion On The Hill"

I know it's posthumous and not really a completed album ... but not only is the songwriting some of the best I've ever heard, his use of instrumentation and tone is (was) incredible

I don't know. I just don't get it. The album is okay, I guess. I just never jumped on the Elliot train. His songs are just boring to me. I can appreciate a good folk song, but he just doesn't impress me, so I don't get the hype.

Oh well. If I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

Uh, obviously he had to use a band live but he had no set "band" he'd occasionally have a guest musician doing something on the track but it was pretty much all him.

it's interesting to track his progress if you look at the demos too

most of his recording sessions spawned 10-15 songs or alts of songs that criminally never made it to album form

new moon did a decent job introducing some

but run through the either/or, jackpot (XO), place pigalle(figure 8) and grand mal rarities if you haven't already---there's a lot of great songs there and it's kinda refreshing when you've about worn the other **** out

Not like Figure 8 is.
XO is way more personal and you can hear traces of his older work in the music. I dunno, i just don't get the same feeling from Figure 8 like I do with the rest of his music.
