Eligible for upgrade with Verizon?

I'm eligible for an upgrade with Verizon. If I were to go to the Verizon store to buy the new phone I want, would the person whose name is actually on the plan need to be there? Meaning, since the plan is under my dad's name, would he have to physically be there with me to upgrade the phone? Or would I be able to do it by myself?
