Electronic Throttle Calibration?

Newbie question,,,,

So I've got the 08 Ultra Electra Glide with the electronic throttle.

The idle is high when I let go of the grip, about 1500 rpm. There seems to be some play in it, because when I turn it forward, the idle drops to 1000 where it should be.

How or is this adjustable? Calibrated???

I think thats called "dealer fix my new toy". I have a new 08 as well and am less than impressed about the design. Mine doesn't have "play" but it idles pretty damn high...like 1100 plus rpm's sometimes... I've have caught myself numerous times cranking back on the throttle trying to "unstick it"...without success,...now that its not snowing here in MI ...this week... maybe a trip to the dealer is in order for them to possibly reprogram this wizz gadgetry. Damn I miss my carbed TC88.

I read in here, that if you turn the ignition switch

on and off 4 times it resets. Wait 10 seconds between

each time. I had a fast idel problem. When I started

it if it was hot. I started shutting down, using the

ignition switch, not the kill switch. Problem stopped.

There are several threads on this subject. Correct by cycling the main switch from Off to Ignition 4 times with the throttle grip in the idle position and the Run switch in the run position. Pause 10 seconds each time you switch (i.e., Ignition 10 sec, Off 10 sec, Ignition 10 sec.. etc.) This allows the ECM to relearn the zero position of the throttle. The system can learn the wrong zero position if you shut your bike off with the run stop switch and your hand on the throttle. Some dealers are now telling folks to turn off their bikes with the main switch to avoid resetting the zero throttle position.

I also overheard a mechanic say that one other problem is people are turning the throttle just slightly when they starting there bike and the pc is learning a new throttle position. They recommend not touching the throttle at start up.
Just another reason not to buy the greatest and latest thing on the market. Give it a year or two to work the bugs out.
I had a Buell Cyclone, first year of it. Think it was 97, and I had 11 recalls. Everything fromfront floating discto kickstand killswitch!

service info............

a TBW can be electronically 'reprogrammed' to the OEM default settings by performing the reprogramming sequence as outlined in the '08 Touring Service Manual on page 4-17 under "Installation of a new Twist Grip Sensor". **** H-D Customer Service is now recommending that instead of the published '3 second' interval , use a 10 second interval.

i have a 08 it does the same but some1 told me turn the key on and off 5 times and it worked but he also told me that i was probably twisting the throttle when i turned it off

Turn the RUN switch to RUN, do not touch the throttle.

Turn on the IGNITION SWITCH, wait for the CEL (Yellow engine light) to turn OFF.

Turn off IGN only, wait for 10 seconds and repeat this sequence 3 more times.

After this, go to your dealer and get the NEW ECM Flash installed in the bike.

What it does is keeps the ECM awake for an additional 10 seconds and gives the TGS (throttle grip sensor) time to settle into a ZERO state, and it is a should be covered under the warranty and a free ECM Flash.

If they aren't aware of the fix, refer them to HDNet, there is a document that details the warranty procedure. Tech Tip 380

Here is an snip of that Tech Tip.

"....In the interim we have released revised calibrations in the latest version of Digital Tech to alleviate the high idle concerns for those customers experiencing the condition. The current software version (1.004.001) and details of the changes can be viewed by selecting the What’s New button on the home screen of DTII. This info is also on h-dnet under: Service>Tools & Equipment Info>DTII>Version Updates-What’s New. The new calibrations will leave the ECM powered up for 10 seconds after key OFF to complete housekeeping, allowing the rider more opportunity to release the throttle grip, so the throttle control can return to true zero before the ECM power is shutdown. This should eliminate rider induced zeroing issues. Additionally, the new calibrations will be less sensitive to voltage changes due to an increased dead-band in the operating strategy. Under certain conditions and riding styles some customers may notice a slightly different throttle feel, or comment on reduced engine responsiveness. This is due to the increased dead-band and will feel similar to a loose throttle cable adjustment on non-ETC (electronic throttle control) vehicles. Therefore, we recommend only re-flashing vehicles for customers experiencing the high idle concern and wait for the next version calibrations before updating vehicles on a wider scale. SE Race Tuner and SE Super Tuner calibrations have not been updated at this time, and re-flashing a stock cal over a Tuner cal may only temporarily alleviate the high idle, until you re-flash back to a tuner cal. It is recommended anytime you replace ECM, TGS or Re-flash the calibration to cycle the Ign. switch 4 times, waiting 10 full seconds after keying off between cycles, to relearn zero TGS
position.
The following warranty credit procedures will apply to domestic dealers only:
Warranty credit will be allowed for re-flashing the calibration at the usual rate.
For OE calibrations including CVO, file an MC claim using labor code 7804 for 0.2 hours
labor."
