Electricity in my car works when the car is off. whats going on?

i just bought a 1965 catalina. the car works fine but i just noticed that when the car is off i all the lights/ac/heater/windshield wipers can still be turned on. when i bought the car the battery it had was absolutly dead im guessing this is why and thats probably the reason why the stereo system was all disconnected from the battery. can any one tell whats going on or how to fix this?
