Electric cooking range smoothtop or coil type which is best?

I agree..The older model coils w/drip pan beneath are very hard to keep clean and looking good.

The glass tops are pretty tough though you could scratch the surface if you use the wrong abrasive cleaners.

The glass tops stay very hot for a long time after turned off.

I have used both and prefer the glass top due to cleanability.

Smooth top will last longer. It requires super flat bottom pans, uneven bottoms won't work. And you will need special cleaning paste to keep the glass clean, about once a week like waxing a car.

When stuff spills you don't have to clean the underpan and they usually take longer to get hot and cool off more slowly than coils.

Coils are cheaper, wear out faster and require more work when spills occur.

So if you have the right pans, you may like the glass top better. I've had the glass top range for many years and much prefer it over coils.

From questions I have seen on YA, the main problems are breakage from dropping heavy pots or pans on the surface. You also need pans with really flat bottoms. I have looked at newer coil type units and they have drip pans that drain into a main pan for ease of cleaning. Life span is debatable since I have only changed coils in units that were at least 15 years old.
