Elder Scrolls Key Lore?

I have never played any Elder Scrolls games to date and upon seeing the recent E3 footage for Skyrim, I am definitely getting it. So what is the most important lore for the Elder Scrolls so that I can have some background knowledge upon beginning my epic journey in Skyrim?
