If you buy the little rubber covers for the wii-motes, they come with straps that are much much nicer.

They replaced the old straps a week or so ago, new remotes come with a thicker strap. And my Wii is from launch day and my sensor bar cable is that long to. It is waaaaay to long

Everything I bought was from launch day (UK launch...8th December). Only thing ive bought after that date was Wii component cables...

One remote was from Wii Play and it has extra thick string on it. I assumed they replaced them.
