Educated woman...a blue collar dude...do these relationships work?

So, I'm a guy in grad school, a married one at that. Two thirds of my classmates are female and many of them single. Most of the guys are spoken for. So today I was talking to one of the girls in my class about her project which dealt with job types and income. Typical stuff for this kind of course. But she went into a tangent about her boyfriend that was working (or trying to) in construction. She was looking at the various job types and then said to me "perhaps I can get him to find a better job with this info". I remarked as long as he's good to go back to school to get it. She shrugged and said she was still working on that one.

Short story aside, do these relationships work? I mean you clearly have a case of an educationally mis-matched couple and this one in particular the woman is already trying to change her man to fit her expectations. Even if the woman isnt trying to do this, how well do these relationships work out.

Purely esoteric question here as I am not female or even in a mis-matched relationship (education wise).

And what guy (no matter the education level) minds being someone else's "fix-it" project?
