Educate me on saxophones *need to buy one

Maybe this isnt even the right forum but I dunno.

My little sister neeRAB a saxophone for school. She is 12 and it is her first instrument. Any reccomendations, branRAB, gadgets etc etc are greatly welcome.

I dont know anything about instruments so hopefully somebody can kinda point me in the general direction. Thanks
 
id recommend a yamaha as-23. its a fairly good beginning alto sax, also get her a selmer c star mouthpiece. she will be able to use it the rest of her career.

also be careful where you buy it from, most music storeRAB will rip you off.
 
C Star mouthpieces are excellent but it might not be the best choice for a beginner. They're kind of thin and require a very strong mouth/lip to play (without unintentionally bending notes). I got a C Star after I had been playing for a year or two (school band) and I remember I kept bending and having wavering notes until I got used to it.

But after you get a little experience, it's definitely a good investment.
 
Do not get a cheap chinese rip off on ebay

Just like cars it is always better to get a well cared for higher quality second hand one than a cheap and shoddy brand new one.

I've played for 12 years now, first horn was a Conn alto, pretty standard intermediate model. not bad. Have since progressed to Baritone and have a beautiful old Yanigasawa (delacquered) with a Berg larson mouthpiece and in the process of getting a nice Selmer mk vi up to playable condition
