edge VS EDGE? not able to get EDGE

I just got my Pearl today, switching from a 7100i. I didn't sign up for the data plan, but was thinking about doing it only if I can get EDGE. From what I read in the book edge means I get data just at a slower speed. The Tmo rep told me that it is edge because of high traffic on the tower and will switch to EDGE when that lessens.
To justify paying the money for the data plan I would like to make sure that I am getting data faster than my painfully slow 7100i.
Does anyone know if what I was told regarding traffic is right?
This might be a reach but has anyone used edge (not EDGE) on a Pearl and can compare it to the 7100i?

I am surprised you could connect to edge at all without a data plan, I used to get data connection refused. I had the 7100t and upgraded to the 8700g as soon as it came out on Tmo.
I almost always get EDGE, rarely edge, so I have never asked about, or even thought about it.
What I can tell you is that the 8700g on EDGE is so much faster than the 7100t. Heck, its just faster in general, just to play a game, or open up an email. If you like the SureType it might throw you a little.
Call and talk to a different person at Tmo and see what they say. Also try emailing your question in via the website. See what you find out.
 
What my service provider told me about the differences between edge and EDGE was that in lowercase it could see the network but not use it. In my case it's because i'd upgraded from a normal phone and the plan hadn't been switched over as that was going to be when the monthly billing cycle switched.
I don't know if that would be applicable in your case but something too look at.
 
I like I7oobie's idea.

Don't know what kind of minutes you use, but I love the BlackBerry Minutes and Mail. Has unlimited data and text messages and 1000 minutes, 59.99. I pay less for my awsome BB than I did for my Sidekick each month.
 
The 8100 will get faster internet than the 7100 on the same network just because of the processer speed the different capitalizations and modes EDGE edge GPRS gprs etc all have different data and voice levels available to them and will show up on the service bar regardless of data plan or not and is just indicative of thev level of service available at the local

Upper case EDGE or GPRS simply indicates that A) you have a BlackBerry Data Plan, and B) you are using the network of a carrier which supports BlackBerry.

If you have edge or gprs, then you will not have BlackBerry data connectivity. If you don't have a BlackBerry Data Plan, then you will also see "data connection refused" as a banner on the home screen.

Occasionally, based upon signal strength and network availability, the BB may display GPRS instead of EDGE, or even edge and gprs. Often after a phone call, there will be a brief moment or two in which this happens while the device connects to the data network again.
 
I decided to sign up for it. I am not getting EDGE. As Lewis said earlier it was lowecase because I didnt subscribe for the plan. Getting EDGE is way faster than the 7100i. I used to start loading a page and then would go and do something else for a minute before the page would load. I'm sure the Pearl isnt as fast as an 8700 on EVDO but for my uses its great. Browsing is now a pleasure rather than a pain.

mine flashes between the 2 from time to time. when im near work it goes from gprs to edge in all lower case then when i get off base it goes right to EDGE. I dont really see a difference in speed much. but i just surf the forums online thats bout it.
 
It is as Lewis mentioned. When it days EDGE or GPRS then you have access to the data network. If it says edge or gprs then you don't either cause A: You haven't signed up for a data plan or B: The data network may be down.
 
i have a 8310 (atnt phone) and im on a rogers network. I have the data plan from rogers but now my phone only shows edge not EDGE like it use to... whats wrong with my bb?

But I'm having the same problem. I live in The OC, California (USA), and for about the past three to four hours I've only been getting the "edge" network, and not the "EDGE" network.

Good to know its not just my phone.

Also, I just did a battery pull after exhausting all other methods. Its working, back on the "EDGE" network now. Hopefully it will start working, but I'm running my gmail client right now and its taking a very long time to check for simple mail.

I'll update what happens, it could be just that its been off for three to four hours, and is taking too long to get all the new emails (i probably missed 20-25 emails)
