Edema/lower back pain/chest pain

Amber is bored

I am in need of advice as to what direction I should go with on this current problem. I was taken by ambulance this morning to the ER from my doctors office because I was short of breath and my pulsox was 92 and when I walked it went down to 87.

The paramedics noticed my heart rate was over 100 and my BP was 150/94. I also had swelling of feet, ankles, legs, hands and face. They take me to the ER where they did a chest xray and blood work. All came back negative. They decided to admit me and then a doctor at my doctor's practice came and saw me and said I could go home. He thought it maybe an allergic reaction.

Now when I was at the dr's office this morning my PC told me to take the lasix every day now not every other day. This dr who works at the same practice tells me to get off of it!

So I come home and the breathing is starting up again. I went to sleep for two hours and awoke to my left side being swollen more than my right. New symptoms are my lower back is extreme pain feeling like a knife is stabbing me in it. I called the dr back (again same one that saw me in ER from my PC's practice) and he said unless my lips and tongue swell he would go back to the ER but then again if my symptoms are bad go back again. He said he can't examine me to say what to do. My question is what else can they do? Right now I am miserable. I called the ER and they said they can't tell me what to do.

Any idea what could be causing this? I have chest pain but again all heart tests are neg. I don't want to waste someones time for nothing (ER) I just hate how I am feeling.

Searchin,

Thanks for the information. I did gain over 6 pounds in two days. I never thought about measuring my girth. I do have thyroid problems, high blood pressure and high cholestrol (last reading I was finally normal).

As for what blood tests they did I have no idea. I just know they did one to check for blood clots.

Quincy,

I am 47 and I have one ovary.

I am trying to surive with this until Monday. I don't want the ER to think I am "nuts" or this colleague of my doctors. I feel this whole episode is going to be a mystery. I should have went to my cardiologist yesterday instead..

Hi...My mother-in-law is sort of going through the same thing, but not with extreme edema on extremities.

She's got congestive heart failure...you definitely need to go back to the hospital and have them make sure that's not what's going on with you.

Did they do kidney function tests as well?

Please let us know the outcome.

They did not do a Kidney fuction test. All they did was blood work to check for a blood clot and a chest xray to rule out fluid around the heart. Since I had a stress test three weeks a go and an echo they said my heart is fine.

I woke up this morning with feet still swollen along with my hands and feet. It is hard to walk now. My breathing so far has been okay. There has to be more they can do.

The frustrating part is I wasn't given anything to reduce the swelling. My PC's colleague thinks I should stop it. Plus he thinks I am not swollen enough to be on them. Not sure how swollen I have to be. My feet can not fit in my shoes.

Its so frustrating. When I did research everything comes up Congestive Heart Failure but again they say no.

I am going to see how the day goes and from there decide what to do.

Ovary was removed due to scar tissue. Inregards to an echo, that was done 3 weeks a go and showed no problems. I have never had an adominal MRI.

Swelling is subsiding this morning so far.......I took off of work tomorrow so I can go see my PC like I was told too. I am still very fatigued though with the back pain. The shortness of breath occurs sometimes when I climb a flight of stairs and sometimes not. It is really hard to saw what is going on with that.

Updating this crazy situation: The pain on my right side of my lower back has not radiated upward. I have a high threshold for pain so its hard to say when I need to go in. Monday is so far away to see my PC.

I guess I am to try and live with all this till Monday.

It would be best if you could see just one doc. That way he knows you and can tell the normal to abnormal for you. I can not believe the blood tests were not more informative of your condition as this does sound like CHF. Which blood tests were run specifically? Do not wait until Monday to return to ER or Dr. office if your symptoms remain unchanged or worsen. Try and make an appoointment with a cardiologist. The lasix would really help if you were to continue with it but then potassium levels have to be watched. Allergic reaction to what!? Try and stay off your feet as much as possible and elevate your legs above heart level. CHF can ome on at any time and suddenly. Measure your abdomen every 8 hours and record the girth. Make sure you measure in the same place each time. Keep a journal of what is going on with you until you see the doc or ER again. Do you have Lupus, Hypertension, Thyroid disorder, Irregular heart beat, cough, diabetic? Did they do an ECG in the ER? If you get too short of breath sit in chair or side of bed and lean forward to breath. Also weigh yourself daily until RTC. Sincerely, searchin

Hi...since you had surgery recently...you do need to make sure you continue seeking help. Is the side you're having pain the same one as the recent overy removal?

Did the doc do an ultrasound of the other ovary as well?

When do you go for the pathology results...?

Again, not normal to have shortness of breath and pain in the back.

Quincy this is the same side as where the ovary was removed several years a go. Tomorrow I will mention this to my dr and go from there. Maybe he will refer me back to my gyn. I am in a lot of pain tonight.
