Ebay Phone on Verizon

I am guessing this has been asked and I just haven't been able to find the answer I am looking for.

I have a verizon plan currently with no data plan. I have a samsung i760 and am up for an upgrade in the coming months. I don't want the data plan but would like a different phone as i have numerous issues with mine currently. I primarily use the calendar, email and certain non internet based apps frequently on my i760.

Talking with Verizon I don't have any real options to satisfy all that I am using with my phone currently unless I buy a data plan. Can i buy a phone off of ebay and activate it on my current plan without getting charged the data plan?

Thanks for the help.

The only phones I have found that are pda type phones that don't need the data plan are the Palm Treo's and the Motorola Q. You can activate them without the data plan so you can text, use the calendar and all the other functions of the pone except the Internet and picture texting. I have a wifi card for my treo so I can connect to the Internet at hot spots. I purchase all my phones off ebay. I don't like having a contract. If I find a better deal then Verizion I am gone tomorrow if I want. I think we would all be treated better if we weren't tied to them with contracts.

thanks for the reply.

Are you on a pay as you go plan or something of the sort to be able to use verizon without a contract?

If i found any smartphone that is on Verizon's site on ebay and bought it do you think it would work without a data plan? Or is it only the models you suggested that would work?

My contract expired a few years ago and you are not required to have have a contract with Verizon for plans only. You can changes plans as much as you want. You can buy and activate phones whenever you want. They only ask you to sign a contract for the free or price reduced phones. Some phones like the blackberry won't work without the data plan. It seem that all the new phone models work that way. The ones I mentioned are the ones I found that work with the basic plan and have more feathers but there are others. I use my calendar and contacts a lot so I need that to sync with my computer. I like the other options also. I don't have time or the need for the Internet on my phone. I do use the Internet on my phone with wifi from time to time, They offer wifi for free on Delta flights now and that helps pass the time on those long flights. I had a blackberry but it didn't everything my Treo 700wx does.

My dad wants a blackberry but doesn't want the data plan. He won't use the internet with his phone. He doesn't even text. He just wants the features of the phone. Can I get one for him on the ebay and it work with Verizon basic plan?

No. If you buy a Blackberry you will be required to have a blackberry plan. I would look at the Treo 700wx and the Motorola Q. These can be purchased on ebay and can be activated on the basic plan. They should do everything he wants and more without having the data plan.

Did you say that all Treo's could be activated w/o a data plan? I am looking at both the Treo 700wx and the 755p, am not sure which one might be better. Similar to the original poster, I want a smartphone but w/o a data plan. I really need to have my outlook calendar with me at all times and am annoyed that Verizon won't let me buy a smartphone without the $30/month data plan. Do you have any opinion about the 700wx versus the 755p?

They will both work with verizon without the data plan. I liked the 700wx when I did the research on both phones. If you do a search on the Internet 700wx vs 755p you will get some good comparisons. Maybe if enough people start using theses phones Verizon will get it that a lot of people don't want or need the data plan.

Do you know if the Treo Pro would work? It comes with wifi which would be great. The seller (on ebay) called Verizon to see if it could be activated w/o data plan (he said he gave them the ESN) and the response was 'maybe'. Or that's what he said they said, if he indeed made the call. Not enough for me to make a decision.
