eating expired food from food banks?

There are so many people who have to go to food banks now. When I went to the department of human services to fill out a food stamp application, I was there over 7 hours. It was wall to wall people. You don't get much at food banks. The one we go to will occasionally give out meat. I'm very leary about that because some of the frozen hamburger meat didn't have an expiration date on it.
Before anyone is quick to judge me, let me explain. My husband lost his job after 12 years. The company he worked for filed bankruptcy so he got nothing in the way of severence pay. I work full time too. We have cut out our internet and cell phones. I only have internet access at work. We have one child and one car. We live in a small house. I have applied for food stamps, but don't have an appointment until oct. In the mean time, to help with our food bill, we've had to go to food banks. I know I'm grateful for getting food their. Most of the stuff they give us is way past the expiration date. We got a case of yogurt that expired on Jul21. Another thing of ranch dressing that expired in march. How far past the expiration can you eat things? Some of the dry stuff like noodles and mac and cheese had a use by date of 2004. I know dry goods are probably still ok, but what about meat and stuff that needs to be refrigerated? Would it still be safe to eat these?
