New Easy A Clip
Super positive review :yay: Hopefully moar @ TIFF
Toronto: 'Clueless' for the 21st Century
I immensely enjoyed an early look at Will Gluck's smart and hilarious "Easy A,'' which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month and then quickly open in wide release on Sept. 17 from Sony's Screen Gems label, generally more associated with low-end horror movies. It basically does for Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter'' what Amy Heckerling's "Clueless'' did for Jane Austen's "Emma'' 15 years ago.
Emma Stone, a Linday Lohan lookalike who's been around a while (she was in "Zombieland'' and "Superbad'') has a potentially star-making role as a virginal junior college student who pretends to sleep with a closeted pal as a favor. Soon she's having ficticious one-nighters with other guys -- sometimes for cash -- acquiring such a reputation that she literally dons a scarlet letter. The unusually strong cast for a teen comedy includes Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Hayden Church, Lisa Kudrow and Malcolm McDowell.
"Easy A'' may be courting controversy by mocking Campus Christians, especially one played by Amanda Bynes, with an unrestrained glee rarely seen in major student product. It even has some subversive fun with its many product placements. Watch for this one.
