Easier Programming PERL or Ruby?

Traditionally, these are done in C or C++—even assembly language—mostly for execution speed, which directly relates to maximum frame rate and responsiveness. Perl and Ruby both have the necessary bit twiddling capabilities but are usually chosen for their string processing power.

Ruby's design is influenced by Perl and both share many language features. However, for every consistency of either language, there seems to be a corresponding quirk. It's not clear which is easier to use.
 
I was thinking of making a 2D sprite rpg with a friend and we were debating what was the easier language to use for this PERL or Ruby?
And could you direct me to a decent place to learn either of these? Thank you very much
