The students decided to measure the speed of the stream by floating apples down a straight section of the stream. Describe the steps the students must take to determine the stream's surface rate of movement (speed) by using a stopwatch, a 10 foot rope, and several apples. Include the equation for calculating rate.
 
Ah yes, its Sunday and homework is due tomorrow.

Use the rope to measure a set distance (scientists don't use "feet", but you're obviously American so we'll use the foot as a distance).
Drop the apple in the stream at one end of the measured distance, use the stop watch to measure the time it took for the apple to travel that set distance.

The speed of the stream is the same equation as the speed of anything: speed = distance / time.
You have the distance (10 feet).
You have the time (from the stopwatch).
