Early Bleach manga discussion. Volumes 1-20

Anyone reading Bleach volumes 1-20 or has read them as of recently with the story still stuck in your head? I have just began reading Bleach and so far it's one of the most enjoyable comics I have picked up in a long time, so far I am loving Rukia, she's a great character and interacts well with Ichigo, there is just something about her character that is so enjoyable to me.

Let's hear your fond memories on this manga or your thoughts on some of the early volumes out there, I'd love to read some insight.
 
I'm a fairly new fan of Bleach among a lot of other manga that are really well-known that I've never started reading until recently. I've finished volumes 1-16 thus far, and I do find it an enjoyable story.

What especially keeps me coming back, I think, is the supporting cast. I've liked the interaction Ishida and Orihime have been having with each other since getting to the Soul Society. Quite a few of the Soul Reapers seem interesting as well, even as they may technically be taking the "antagonistic" side for now.

Ichigo's an alright protagonist, but thus far there's not much that really makes him stand out to me from the typical shonen hero mold--such as the habit of "It would normally take YEARS to master this aspect of being a Soul Reaper/ninja/whathaveyou, but shonen-protagonist so super-special-awesome that he can do it in days!" and not much interesting development to make up for that weak aspect of the character. I'm still fairly early on, though, so I hope to see more development of his character as the story goes on.

This is all coming from someone who's kind of a newbie to all this stuff, though, so take it for what you will!

I wonder why they got rid of that Miyori girl, they forgot about her in the manga, and they never used her in the anime. She was a good foil for the zaniness that is the Kurosaki family.
 
I liked the earlier volumes of Bleach....both the character designs (say what you will about Kubo,the man draws his characters really well,and as is the case with many manga,they improve over time),and the interactions (I also love the "thurabnail sketch comics" that appear between chapters sometimes)...One of the things that drew me into the series is that for once,the lead male and female (Ichigo and Rukia) are just frienRAB (and don't even start off that way),not a potential couple as is the case with many shonen series I've read (yeah,I disagree with much of the fandom,what makes their relationship interesting is that it's not romantic,and I'm amazed that Kubo said pretty much the same thing in one of his interviews)....
Also loved the "Soul Society" arc....Ichigo and Co go to rescue Rukia,and end up making a bunch of new frienRAB/allies along the way (seeing as not everyone is in favor of Rukia's execution,like Renji,her childhood friend who is in love with her, and Hanatarou who made frienRAB with her after her imprisonment)...plus,there's a whole bunch of interesting plot twists....
 
I was just re-reading the story where Kon is first introduced.

It was nice to see him be able to do things with Ichigo's body like jump really high and be really strong, things that a normal human is unable to do.

Sadly, Kubo made Kon into comic relief instead of having him do something helpful once in a while.
 
I have fallen in love with Bleach and it's funny because I am only on volume 2 yet I am reading the newest stuff in Shonen Jump and creating possible spoilers for me, but I don't care.....I love the story!
 
I know right. When he was first introduced, he was a pervert but he had a rather sympathetic backstory. His entire kind was wiped out by the Soul Society. But once Ichigo stuffed Kon into that plushie, good bye potentially cool character, hello most useless character on the show.

Come to think of it. I always loved the start of the series. Pretty basic and original concept, teenage boy fights monsters with only a sword. I would've loved more of those. Maybe even develop Orihime & Chad's powers more before the Soul Society arc. Where Kubo got the idea for to tutn this into another DBZ clone I'll never know. It's like some rule that every SJ series should rip off DBZ, Death Note being the exception proving the rule.
