E72 or E5 as upgrade to E63?

My E63 is failing. I'd like to get a similar phone that does 3g in Europe and has built-in GPS. The E72 and E5 seem the obvious solutions. Having read the long threads on these two phones, I worry about the stability of the E72 and the screen on the E5. I realize there are other complaints, but those would also apply to the E63 and I've been happy with the E63.

What phone should I get?

I would go with the E5 for the price. It does the same as the E72 for a much lower cost. But it also depends on your taste on their physical design.

How are the E72/E5 worse than the E63, other than that the screen is weaker on the E5?

My understanding is that the E72 has the same screen. My concern with the E72 is stability, given the number of complaints in the main E72 thread.

The E72/E5 have built-in GPS and will do 3g in Europe, which I regard as the main things missing in the E63. If the E5 is readable enough outside to figure out where I am with google maps, that would be ok. For extended use, I could run joikuspot on the E5 and use the screen on my ipod touch. I'd probably get the E72 for the better screen if the E72 is stable enough.

I wonder if there is anywhere that carries the E5 in NYC so I could see it. Too bad Nokia closed its store.

As far as screens, the E63 screen is the same as the E71. The E72 screen is better than both of these, more vibrant colors and brighter at the same setting. The E5 will be washed out compared to what you have but I can't state to what degree. Given the price point of the E5 and the added RAM (256MB versus 128MB) it might just be the way to go. Not sure what your budget is for a device or time frame. You could always pick up an E5 temporarily to sell when something better (E6) comes along or even a used E72.

The E72 price point is fine. My main concerns are the crashes, freezes, etc. reported in various threads here. If the E5's extra RAM made it more stable, it would seem the way to go.

If rumors are correct. the E6 will be announced shortly, so it's probably worth waiting a bit, then decide once we know something about the E6, such as features, ship date, price point. I have a trip in about a month for which I'd like a new phone.

You won't see the E6 ship within a month. Hell, you might be hard pressed to find an E7 for sale in the US even thought it is shipping in "select markets".

There might be more places in NYC to see the E5. When I was last in Manhattan the RCS Experience store at 56th and Madison had a number of unlocked Nokia devices (N8, C7, E72, N900). They may have an E5 to take a look at. I wouldn't buy from them as they want WAY too much money for all their devices but it may be a place to get your hands on the device.

I should probably start another thread, but what about the C6? It seems to do everything I want from the E63/E72/E5, with a bigger screen and only a bit more weight.

If I understand correctly, the C6 has GPS, European and US 3g, Ovi maps, web browsing, ability to sync google calendar, can play music, can run joikuspot, can run nokia sportstracker, seems to run jbaktaskman and python for s60.

Are there any features the C6 lacks compared to E72/E5 or any other relevant issues?

EDIT: C6, not C6-01

in USA the e72 is $100 more than the e63 and e5. The e5 has the worst screen of the bunch. I don't see it as much of an upgrade from the e63.

see earlier in this thread. I'll likely wait for the E6 announcement.

I don't see any good alternatives at this approximate price point. Unlocked, no contract androids and iphones are a lot more.

I have an e63, my partner has an e72 and I upgraded to an e5. I can speak to this. i upgraded to the e5 because I needed the fast 3g and was tired of using external gps. I spend a lot of time outside in very bright light (skier) and the e5 screen makes the phone almost unuseable. Both the e63 and e72 screens are much superior. The upgrade from s60 rel 3.1 to 3.2 is a mixed bag. the os layout is a little bit improved but the predictive text imput is much worse. I don't know how that happened. As far as the physical phone, the e63 was my favoite: it has the extra phisical buttons that you can program, i used these a lot. And it was the right thickness and had grippy back cover that make it perfect for one handed use. The e72 feels too slim and slippery, and is heavier. Having said that, if I had to choose one now it would be the e72 because I need the fast 3g and gps and the screen on the e5 is really REALLY bad in bright daylight.

I've had the E5 for almost four months now. The phone itself is great, though the messaging interface has lagged on me a couple times (like you wait 10 seconds for the reply screen to open from viewing the text message... only happened for like 1 day though) and a few other minor problems... like the fact that the camera sucks without good lighting. Also, the screen isn't that big of a problem. It works fine for me in sunlight and you can't really see a difference between a 16M colour screen vs the 256k on the E5. Also, you WILL want a screen protector and possibly a case, the phone slides out of pockets and hands verrry easily and the screen scratches up easy (Not deep scratches, just those annoying ones you can see at the right angle). Battery cover also pops off way too easy.

But it's definitely an upgrade from the E63. I was in your same situation 4 months ago (except I didn't have a previous Nokia) and I went with the E5 over the E71/E72.

I'm currently testing the C6. It has a bigger screen and keyboard than the E63/E5/E72, and is therefore a bit heavier. The screen quality is as good as the E63's. It seems to do everything the E63 could do, plus 3g in both US and Europe and built-in GPS. It could be a bit snappier and could have longer battery life, but so far seems quite usable. I haven't tried it outside yet.

I was also planning on getting the C6 when I was looking at buying my E5. Right now my E5 is acting up as we speak... for some reason it won't connect to the internet at all.
