E65: Reduced VS Full Character Support

Hi folks,

Under Menu / Messaging / Options / Settings / Text Message / Character Encoding there are two options: reduced or full character support.

The owner's manual barely mentions this feature, and I can't find anything about it in a thread here or on a Google search, so I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between the two choices?

Reason I ask is that I have a text message in the Thai language on my (Series 40) 6270 which displays correctly, but when I forward or BT the message to my (APAC) E65, the Thai characters don't display and, instead, I get a bunch of little empty boxes.

Grateful for any clues .....

If you try to read a language not supported, that's what you see, gibberish.
 
speaking of characters and text messaging, but does anybody know any solutions to fix my T9 dictionary? i know i've read in other forums that you can't actually edit the dictionary, but everytime i put type "you", the first word is "yot"- and i would have to change it to the next available word, which is then "you".

The funny thing is, it was "you" a couple weeks ago then, I must have added a word in my dictionary and it changed it to "yot" now. Does anyone know if I can add another word to have it back to "you" as the first available word for T9?

there's always a file that keeps record of all the words that you add to the dictionary, the location of this file varies depending on the OS.
what phone are you using?
i reckon if you open the file on your computer, remove the word from there and replace it on your phone, it should solve your problem.
all words in the file are separated by some character [which will be easily identifiable] so you should remove the character as well..
i have *not* tried this myself so keep a backup just in case..
i did back up this file once before formatting my phone so that i could replace it and avoid having to add the words to the dictinary again.. that worked.
 
I don't know about encoding, but S40 has better (!) font support than S60. Almost all the APAC phones contain nearly all APAC fonts, but you're limited to your local input method, so you can display text messages from other locations even if you can't type them. But stupidly S60 contains only your local font and the local input method.
 
Bummer, especially since Nokia lists Thailand as being part of APAC, but thanks for the feedback!

And I agree it's really frustrating when some useful Series 40 features aren't available on Series 60 handsets from the same manufacturer!

you need to flash it with the thailand product code if you want it to display thai characters.... I had a euro n70 before and i flashed it to the thai n70 and had thai character support
 
well you get english and thai... U know why they do it?? How often does a person need 10 languages on one phone. Ive heard of bi-lingual.. tri-lingual maybe... but anything more than that.. dont know...
 
Uhm, you might be surprised. I work in a medium sized company and all of the management and technical people can speak at least three languages. I can speak five languages but I'm only fluent in three. Nokia really needs to have better font support if they want to sell to the enterprise market.
 
Agreed. For me, it's not that I want to type messages in anything other than English (or perhaps another Latin based language), but full (or at least improved) character support is useful when someone needs to send me an address by SMS in Chinese or Thai etc.

It doesn't happen so often that this is a deal-breaker for me, but if Nokia can offer it on Series 40 handsets, I don't think they should deny Series 60 owners the same feature(s).
