While my home base is the US, I am currently in Europe on a business trip. I want to share with you the issues surrounding the unlock procedure for this device.
Before I left I called Cingular and requested the unlock codes in a expedited fashion. Non expedited would have been 7 working days. Three days later I received the code by text message, without further explanation.
Put in the local SIM and it was not obvious that it was requesting the unlock.
800 number won't work if calling from overseas, so I had my wife call Cingular to figure out what to do. She was given this number as a free call from a mobile phone: (916) 843 4685
Talked with them on 3 separate occasions to get the phone unlock. Each time working with a different procedure. Finally we started trying some things and it worked.
Here is how it worked:
power off phone, remove old SIM, put in new SIM;
power up;
phone will ask for the PIN of the SIM, enter it;
then briefly the phone will flash "invalid Smartchip" then it will restart;
restart will take a while longer and it will sit for a while with the nokia logo on the screen and the display in sleep mode, wait until you are back at the smart chip invalid message;
now start entering: #pw+enter unlock code here+1#
after the # sign is entered it will say the it is unlocked;
My unlock code was an all numerical 15 digit string.
I am actual quite surprised that Cingular agreed to give the unlock code.
