e62 - Missing Network Settings - Help!

I just got an e62 (Cingular), and I'm running into a problem. I've downloaded a couple of Java apps (Google Maps, Opera Mini), and I'm trying to set their network access options in the Application Manager.

Here's the problem. There are *supposed* to be four options available here:

Ask Every Time
Ask First Time
Always Allowed
Not Allowed


However, only two of these are showing up:

Ask Every Time
Not Allowed

The other two options simply are not there. Nokia says "Cingular must have locked those options down", and Cingular says "Absolutely not".


Can someone tell me what's going on, and how I can get those two missing options back? I don't know if the problem is a Cingular lockdown, a bug in the firmware, Nokia deliberately designing the OS so that untrusted apps don't get those choices, or what.

But this cripples any network/internet based app (or at least, Java app) that you might use, and that's a deal breaker for me.


Any help would really be appreciated. I want this to work.
 
I'm experiencing this same problem...it seems to apply across all Java-enabled apps. If both Nokia and Cingular deny the issue, maybe a fix will be coming in a Firmware upgrade? Any more info would be appreciated.
 
I called Nokia, they say the only possibility is that it's a Cingular lockdown (which is bull, because it's always possible it's a bug in their OS).

So I called Cingular, and they completely deny that they would ever lock down such a feature.


We've got each company blaming the other, and no fix in sight since no one has clear responsibility for this problem.



So, folks, I would ask two things:


1. If there is anyone who does NOT have this problem with Java Apps, please reply in this thread and let us know!

2. To all you E62 owners, start calling Nokia *and* Cingular and start *****ing to them both. (When you call Cingular, ask for "Data Support", they're the guys you need to speak with)
 
I too have a new E62, and like yourself have installed google maps and Opera. I am not having any network issues with Opera, but google maps keeps asking the silly questions. Hmmm. I think I will just not use Google maps.

I have exactly the same problem - only with java apps like opera mini and google maps. Native S60 apps like opera mobile are fine. To be honest it's stopped annoying me so much, as I seem to press the OK button unconsciously now.
 
Yea, I have this same problem with google maps. Never had this problem when I had the E61. I hate cingular and how they ruin good phones. Looks like the E62 is going back.
 
That is a Cingular issue. Same with SLVR and a few others. Cingular has removed that option forcing developes to purchase a Cingular certificate to sign their applications with.

Nokia has nothing to do with this.

Work-around: If it is possible (and I don't know if this is possible), take the original Nokia firmware and flash the phone with it. Take away Cingular firmware and this issue will go away.
 
Actually, you want to ***** to Cingular Developer Support. This is not a data issue. This is only to **** with developers to force them to spend un-neccassery money to become "official marketing partner of Cingular" and gain access to Cingular certification.

Any app that is signed with a Cingular certificate will give you the "Always Allow" option.

Actually....a VeriSign certificate might maybe work now that I think about it....

Yup, I guess Cingular just want developers to certify their apps. Still sucks!
 
I'm trying to get ahold of someone at Cingular Dev Support (with little luck, so far), so that I can complain.

I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble and expense to return my E62 and buy an E61 instead. My concerns are the lower internal RAM, the complications of making it work in the US (are the US AC-4U and DC-4 chargers even compatible?), and the fact that Nokia USA won't even support it.


On a seperate note, can you give me an example of a couple of signed/certified apps so I can see this for myself?
 
I don't know of any on the top of my head. Our latest PayWi application is signed with a VeriSign certificate but I'm can't release that application just yet. But I tested it on a SLVR last night and it gave me the option of "Ask Once" or whatever the MOTO phones say. Without signed app it didn't give me that option.
 
So I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Cingular, talking to a Data Services tech who was an excellent sport. Although initially giving me the "Well this is a problem with the 3rd party app" line, I explained to him that the error was in the firmware, walked him through getting the problem (repeated confirmations) to occur with Google maps, and showed him the location of the missing options. He agreed with me that this was a firmware issue, and was definitely NOT good phone behavior. Hopefully if enough people call and bring attention to the issue, it'll end up being fixed.

However, for now, I'm in "Just get it work" mode since my hands are elsewise tied. My current (and as of yet unresearched) thought is to find a way to sign the apps myself. Since I can import my own certificate to the phone, I can assume that if I then sign the app with my cert., the missing options will be enabled. If I get something working (or if I fail, although that's not thinking positively ), I'd be happy to post a walkthrough so others can get their Java apps networking.
 
Erm, yes. They install their own, modified version of the firmware which may or may not suck. Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology, but what I was trying to say was that I made it through the usual customer service wall of "3rd party apps and anything involving them are Not Our Problem" to having someone say "Wow, it seems like it's our part of the software that's doing this and that's not right."

It's quite possible that it's not going to change anything, but at least someone at Cingular actually admitted it was their issue.
 
As ridiculous as this restriction is, I could deal with it with google maps, since you only have to press OK once every 30 seconds or so. Widsets, on the other hand, are completely unusable.
 
Actually, there's something weird about what Cingular is doing here. They allow you to select "Ask Once" for native S60 apps, even unsigned (assuming you've changed the setting in application config to allow unsigned apps), so the restriction is only for J2ME.
 
That is correct.....S60 3rd Edition native apps requires Symbian certificate to run on any 3rd edition device. So all S60 3rd Edition apps are signed.....J2ME are not required to be signed, so that is where Cingular comes in.
 
I use a site for an online sportsbook and I went to use my phone to check on a bet I had made and they java page where you make bets is just not there. Everything else on the site is there, but the java app is missing. Jesus.

I guess this is still better then my 8125 and WM5 freezing up all the time.
