Gamers, developers and industry members streamed on to the floor at the annual video game convention, Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), on Tuesday (June 11) in Los Angeles.
It has been a week of new products and flashy presentations. On Monday (June 10) Microsoft announced the latest details of it Xbox One including a sell date of November and a price point of 499 dollars (USD) and Sony finally unveiled the PlayStation 4 at a media event with a price 100 dollars lower than its competitor.
Martin Rae, the president of Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, says that even though the gaming industry has been in a bit of a dry spell, all of the new technology will spur some growth.
"Some people say Nintendo, their hardware may not be up to snuff with new consoles or whatever. They have a great library so, don't discount them," said Rae. "What I love about Microsoft and Sony right now is that the hardware is going to allow us to do some things that we've never done before and it's going to be really cool. So if you've been sitting on a console platform for 6-7 years and you've done your games and you really love them, what can I do with a new console. It's going to rejuvenate the industry and be a really big thing."
On Tuesday, gamers finally got the a chance to get their hands on both the Xbox One and the PS4 and the results were mixed.
"I'm going to wait and see. There's no way, day one, I'm going to go for it. Although, the Xbox One looks really good," said Xander Denke.
"Any game system, it comes down to the games. Sure you've got cool features, peripherals, but it all comes down to games," said Greg Walus.
"I'm excited with PlayStation 4 being a little more open which means better games," said David Suermann. "So yes, if there's better games, then yes, it's a win."
E3 is not just about hardware. Attendees got to check out new games, many of which were boosted by the hardware upgrades of the consoles.
The Xbox 360 is currently the best-selling gaming console in the United States, but global sales are almost on par with the PlayStation 3.
The new Xbox and PlayStation are both pricier than the 300 Wii U which Nintendo launched late last year but which has sold poorly, partly due to a dearth of new gaming titles.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo runs from June 11 through June 13.
