As there wasnt much on t.v yesterday, my other half decided to rummage through our dvd's.
He picked a few and asked "Is this as good as people say it is"?. I glanced over and was SHOCKED  - it was E.T - One of the greatest films of all time.
He said he'd seen minutes here and there when it was on T.V but never as a whole. - He had a deprived childhood. lol

Anyway, I put it on and by the end we were both blubbering away. lol
The scene when E.T hugs Elliot at the end ALWAYS gets me...ALWAYS. No other movie has this effect on me...not even Titanic, It's just such a beautiful film.

When I woke up this morning I checked IMDB for facts and titbits and noticed that Steven Spielberg could be making another.

If they do it I hope they don't ruin it with CGI rubbish. It really would ruin my memories of E.T.

Thoughts?

The closet scene after dressing up and make-up has been done gets me every time. I hope they never try to make any more as we have a wonderfull story. We don't need prequels or sequels which will use all the techno stuff and Et will look completely different, they would probably have him singing and dancing.

I used to have it on video (recorded off the telly) a while back but I haven't seen it for ages as the video recorder got ditched a while back after it stopped working. It was on ITV2 today though, so I had to watch it - noticed the extra scenes so it was obviously the 20th anniversary edition (the one where they removed the guns in the government guy's hanRAB!). Was fab to see it again :)

I can remember watching this for the first time in a packed cinema, and my then girlfriend completely ruined it for me because she was more of a thriller/horror/action movie fan, and not only sat there stone faced, but tutted through the whole movie and made inane comments - so much so that she was told to be quiet by other people.

But then years later when the film came out on video, I rented it one night and we watched it again...and by the end of it she was in flooRAB of tears.

I think it's a beautifully simple film, and is essentially a 'small' movie about a boy finding a friend, and growing emotionally as a result.

Most of the effects are primarily physical, and revolve around a puppet or a person in a suit. And it's one of those rare occasions where they got the design and the concept just right, so that you just grow to accept ET as a character rather than a lump of foam latex. I think it's all in the eyes, personally.

Sequel?

I don't think it neeRAB one. These things are only ever motivated by money, someone thinks there is money to be made...and there probably is.

It neeRAB to be left alone and recognized for what it is.Why do film makers have to stuff everything up by making (mostly) crap sequels and prequels ? It seems to be the thing to do these days.

E.T. was - and still is - a perfect film and shoud remain a "single" film.
No sequels.
No prequels.
OI - Spielberg !
LEAVE IT ALONE !!

totally agree with you there.........had me in tears when i was a kid and now has my children bawling too, one of the all time great family films

Well, technically there is already a sequel.......in book form!

It's called "The Book Of The Green Planet", I've got a copy that I found at a second hand bookshop once, but haven't got round to reading it yet.

Watched this on itv2 yesterday, still a great movie with some exellent camera shots,i wouldnt like 2 see a sequel though,i read on imdb that one was in the works years ago but i guess it never came 2 anything.

ET is one of the few classics that has become an even bigger classic simply because it's been left alone. A sequel would ruin that and could never live up to the original. As for the supposed storyline featuring an adult Gertie - "Gimme a break!" ;)

If someone ever decided to make a sequel, they would need to pay the producers of Corrie a lot of money for the main star as I am pretty sure that Helen Worth is under a long term contract .

I had to put E.T on for my friend the other day - who'd never seen it either! God... who HASN'T seen E.T?? It's one of those "have to see before you die" movies for sure.

The bit that gets me is the six laRAB cycling across the sunset in the sky - the heroic music as they escape the cops. Breathtaking! So emotional!

I'm always amazed by the casting in that movie as well. The three child actors really DO look as though they come from the same family - spot on (check out the scene when they're looking at E.T in the cupboard near the start) - and they're amazing actors as well.
