just came back from walmart.there are about 20 bettas in little plastic containers, which are dotted on the sides with green/grey mould, and thick mouldymaterial at the bottom of the containers as well.looks as if the water has never been changed.hate to see them suffering and dying from this neglect.aside from calling the manager(im afraid that nothing will be done, they will just humor me,then hang up and go on as usual.)is there anything else i can do?please dont say buy them all,i have well cared for bettas of my own-if i had to buy them all,i would have to buy every shipment they get, every time-i havent got the money/space to have hundreds of bettas!but it seems a shame this store is allowing fish to die of neglect, especially when a simple water change would have saved them.ps-b4 any1 starts h8in',i give generously to both animal and human oriented charities, every time i ask how to help animals/fish,people write"why dont u care about people"well,I DO.thats why im a nurse.i help people all day long.

Well, there's not alot you can do. You can bring it up with the store manager and you can notify your local humane society of animal abuse who (at least here in Pittsburgh) are required to investigate any report made. So they would at least go have a look. You can also boycott. This actually got a local PetLand in trouble! Good going for those boycotters :)

Whatever you do, don't buy them. That just makes them profit and get more fish. I've thought about taking stickers with info on the PROPER care of bettas and sticking them on the cups or on the counter. Or ones that say how horrible Wal*Mart is to all their livestock.

Wha tyou can do really depends on what fish are classified as in your state/city. Some places they are not considered "animals" under humane laws. Best bet is to contact your local humane society or aspca.

I agree with patches. Contact the store manager. I freaking hate seeing dead fish at my Walmart. I tell them everytime!

I wouldn't go to the store manager, chances are he is aware of this. I would contact corporate and inform them what is going on and what store it is at. Be firm and explain that you are very disgusted and expect something to be done about this.

When you go above like this, the store manager and the person in charge of the pet department will both get in trouble which is exactly what should happen.

I called the Humane Society in my town and they said because it's a store to call the police a file a report first and then they'd give a referral to the Humane Society. I feel bad for them too! and the little frogs they sell. How about starting a online e-mail writing campaign to wal-mart Or to PETA? I'll send one to both of them if You will! tell all your friends and the people in your school to do it too. Call the newspaper or tv news station. maybe if enough people take notice, they'll stop selling the poor creatures. Let's help them!
