DVDs in the United States

Don't know if this is the right place to post this, if not then very sorry, and please direct me to the thread I should be using.

I was told by a friend of mine that when films are released to the cinema in the US, they are also released on DVD that same day because of a guy taking them to court about not wanting to watch the film in the cinema.

Is this true, first me and anyone else I know apart from the person above knows about it.
 
You friend is speaking BS

Believe me if that had been the case i would have got my mum to pick me up some of these movies on dvd when she was in the states last month.
 
Simultaneous cinema/disc releases are something that Hollywood has been looking into for sometime ,mainly as a way of reducing piracy.

It will probably happen eventually in the HD era but not for a while.

The only instances of it happening currently are where a UK cinema release coincides with a R1 dvd release ,but thats less often these days.

IIRC it was Click with Adam Sandler where that last occurred
 
They've already tried simultaneous Cinema/DVD releases, and what has happened, is that many cinemas will boycott the movie and refuse to show it because it was freely available outside the cinema cicuit. Seems movie companies are open to it, but the Cinemas see it as cutting into their profits.
 
Long way to go.

How many people would buy a $30 -40 for an unseen movie movie compared to going to a Cinema? And even if it does happen the Cinema chains around the US and the world will boycott the movie so movie studios will lose out there. (although I don't know how much boycotting the Cinema companies can do before business starts hurting them!!)
 
I bet a lot of people would, Spend $35 plus travel, food, parking etc for a family of four to go to the Cinema or $30 and get the ability to rewatch and get food at supermarket prices.
 
The question should be, how many people would pay anything to go watch it in a cinema, surrounded by annoying chavs talking and playing with their mobile phones all the way through the movie, and paying extortionate prices for food and drink, when you can watch the movie FOC in the comfort of your own home by taking one of the copies that your mate's just bought and made thirty copies of?
 
As annoying as it can be, and expensive as it can be. You can't beat going to the cinema. Yes, as home cinema gets more advanced it may be better but you'll never be able see the films in the way they were meant to be shown.
 
You can't beat going to a "state of the art" cinema. Which is more expensive.

Odeon Lescieter Square is pretty damm good, but next to it the Odeon multiplex is crap and my 55" Sony HDTV can do much better on just plain DVD!!!
