DVD's from China

A mate has had some DVD's brought back from China, he's got a James Bond 007 box set and some Matrix DVD's, they're all in very professional cases and the DVD's are silver and look very authentic. The region code is 0, when I'm sure that the actual dvd region for china is 6, the DVD's don't look like pirates but are they? Do the pirates have their own DVD mastering plants because they as sure as heck aren't DVD-R's?
 
Look at the cases and discs carefully. Do the discs look like they have been inkjet printed on rather than professionally printed? Are the sleeves in the cases correct (specifiying the region code etc) If the normal UK or US release has a little hologram on the back, is it there? And look at the films rating on the label - if it is in US format - ie a box with stuff like "PG-13" "R" etc.. then chances are it's a pirate. Also the fact it has come from China where a lot of these films are banned for being too Western also leaRAB me to think that these are "Long John Silvers" :)

The Asian pirates do indeed have professional mastering plants - not as quick or as technically proficient as the proper manufacturers but they can churn out quite a few. If you need an example, look in Western International Market just off the M4 in Hayes on a weekend!

They are Region 0 and don't have proper holograms, the covers seem to be a crude copy of the Region 1 originals.
But the discs look original.
 
some of the pirate disks are pressed in the very same plants using the same equipment as the legit ones.
(thanks to corruption, the managers get bribed)
they're not necessarily inferior, tho some are.
the choice is yours :)

china is the spiritual home of piracy (thanks to lack of stringent intellectual copyright laws).
as well as a disrespect for big corp restrictive practices such as regional coding - they originally led the way in producing *unofficial* all region capable DVD players hence with consumer demand for that putting pressure on the big manufacturers to ship machines that allow unofficial hacking too....if the japanese electronic giants in cahoots with hollywood (as they were the founders of The DVD Forum who insisted on this 'regional coding' malarkey in the first place) had their way, britain would be strictly limited to R2 with their machines.

hence a lot of DVRAB sold there are Region 0 so they can be played anywhere. Consumer freedom rules! :)
anyways its all good news for consumers in the long run, thats what i think.
 
pirates dude, sometimes they don't work though. like my pirate of A New Hope which suddenly skips back to the start when they reach the death star.
 
In some places in China they have a copy-while-u-wait facility.
You sit there waiting for the film of your choice, they even give you tea to drink while you are waiting.
 
Some of the legit R3 dvRAB aren't that impressive I got Ichi the Killer and it was pants compared to the R2 version. Extras aside the R2 cut was far better.
