DVDs are annoying me

Hello

I just wanted to start a conversation about dvRAB and why i find them annoying, feel free to disagree or to make fun and have a laugh.

The first thing is New Released dvRAB i think are way too expensive like

I hate it when the inside bit breaks so you can't play them anymore.

The industry says it's illegal to copy/bypass the copy protection, but i would say that you buy the right the movie (just like computer software) so aslong as you aren't distributing it it should be ok.

but why should we have to copy them? there should be nothing wrong with dvRAB, i think the industry is ripping us all off, but mayb e only i can see that.

I had a problem with the Simpsons Season boxset cases. What with them being digipaks, if the inside bit holding the DVD becomes weak or breaks then as soon as you open the case the disc falls out

I agree, two sided discs are a pain

So are films split over 2 discs or 2 titles on a disc for absolutely no reason

Also unskippable anti piracy aRAB, almost enough to make you want the pirate ones as they don't have these on

Plus films re-released again and again with new features, also the horrible clipper cases (you know the ones I mean)

There are some films I want on DVD but can't find in the shops, including Blade Runner (the good quality print), Westworld, plus quite a few manga ones such as Wings of Honneamise and Battle Angel Alita. I also can't find Metropolis (the original one) in the shops (I know I can buy it online, but I'd rather be able to find it in a shop)

Enough of my ranting for now

I no longer buy DVRAB. I have enough of a backlog of unwatched films to keep me going for several years. I rent the occasional one though.

Top tip: Do not clean the discs using a Brillo pad. Seriously, why do people find it so difficult to keep them pristine? How ever would they have coped with vinyl recorRAB?

I have never had a disc break on me in any way, shape or form. Are you pressing down on the holding clip, as you should, when you remove the disc from the box? Alternatively keep the discs separate from the boxes in the plastic sleeves availabe cheaply by the hundred from any good supplier.

dvd's are a much more convenient format than the old VHS, the ability to skip to any part of the film, the extra features that come with it.. The ease of use of the disc, the fact that majority of any damage caused to a disc comes from the user rather than a machine (Anyone ever remember their old VHS chewing tapes, meaning you'd have to buy another copy of the film, DVD players dont chew discs)

DVD boxes 99% of the time in the same size, VHS ones varied in size, and even had those really horrible cardboard ones that the tape slipped into.

Free DVD's in newspapers and magazines, ever get them with another format??

Yeah, DVD is so annoying I can barely contain myself :-)

My gripes:

-The cost of new releases. If the industry is serious about combating piracy the they have to bring the cost down to an amount that makes it not worthwhile to buy or download an inferior copy. In Hong Kong (where I live) you can buy dodgy copies of all the latest films, especially new cinema releases for just over

I currently only have two serious DVD annoyances:

Firstly, I hate it when they put hundreRAB of adverts and menus between you and the programmes on TV boxsets. Films I can understand - you will probably only watch them once every so often (once a week, month, etc), but with TV shows you often only want to watch two or maybe three episodes at once and I loathe having to go through the rigmoral of skipping adverts and navigating menus everytime I want to watch another episode!

Similarly, I will often watch a TV series on DVD every few weeks/months (rotating through them all) and have to see those same trailers and go through the same menu processes each time. I can understand the adverts on, perhaps, one of the disks - but for every single one in the boxset!?! Gah!

Secondly I hate the unskippable FACT piracy trailers. You wouldn't stand for a lecture on the dangers of not paying road tax from a cashier at the post office having just paid your premium, so why do I have to sit and be told repeadly that 'piracy is a crime' having just gone out and spent good money on a legal storebought copy!!! Of course, the ultimate irony is that those who *are* pirates don't have to sit through the patronising adverts 'cause they've had the good sense not to pay through the nose for an offical copy!!!

DVD commentaries: For every interesting, well-thought out, decent, informative commentary, there are about one hundred deathly dull, uninteresting, utterly shite commentaries. Yet me being slightly OCD in this aspect, I have to listen to them all before I return the disc (rentals I mean). I especially like those commentaries where there is silence for about ten minutes  I can't believe how little planning gos into most commentaries. Surely they should watch the film, plan out what to say and when, rather than just watching it and making random comments.

I especially hate commentaries by technical crew. I mean really, who wants to hear a commentary by the guy responsible for the lighting?

Same goes for extras. Mostly all you need is a decently put together 25 minutes or so documentary about the making of the film. Instead you seem to get a million 5 minute long segments most of which where used as promotional adverts for a film you have already bought/rented! The exhaustive extras you get on films like Matrix are just baffling. 10 hours of extras for a 2 hour film? **** off.

There are no dvd's where you can't skip trailers.
You may have to skip them one by one,but none force you to watch anything bar the piracy adverts.
I think you will find those Chinese dvd's will be watch once then die discs.
Disney planned to use them in the US to lower the price, but most in the real world who shop on the internet rarely pay more than

My DVD player annoys me, mainly because there is no eject button on the remote! WTF! So you have to actually get up off your arse! Shocking!

Also, my dad abolished the DVD/VCR, so now we just have a DVD, and it takes ten years to set it up to tape something! Seriously! We're already setting it for Christmas...

Let me modify this sentence to "UK is a rip-off!"

PMSL - I thought you were some gaming geek that goes round saying thing like "sux0rs" and "leet"

You mean you can't sit on your arse and press button to eject a dvd and have it magically fly back into the box and onto the shelf?

I know but its annoying when you can't go straight to the title menu isn't it?

No, actually they are genuine DVRAB that can be played again and again, they've just done away with packaging and set a price point to take on the pirateers. Here's a link about it if you're interested: http://www.slate.com/id/2114505/

I do take your point that most people in the UK wait for the price of DVRAB to drop before buying, however my point was that in Hong Kong we can already buy the DVRAB for the equivalent of a couple of quid from the bootleg stalls (which are everywhere) before the movie even comes out! The price neeRAB to come down to make it not worthwhile to buy an inferior pirate copy. The problem is massive in China where hardly anyone buys genuine dvRAB. And yes in a lot of cases the quality is very good if not identical to the original...

Thats the thing... if 'you wait a few months' then you are buying an old DVD in movie terms. If you want to combat piracy then what good is a movie that becomes affordable months after its cinema release?

Fantastic! This is good news. Can you provide a link please as it would be great to know which version you recommend...
