DVD vs Blu Ray

First of all, let me say that this is NOT about picture quality etc.
With DVD region variations, on R1 you often get a better DVD in terms of extras, release dates, price etc.
Do you get the same thing with BluRay discs ?
Are all regions of BluRay discs the same ?

As I said in a previous post, a lot of blu-ray movies come in region free. Use Movietyme.com and you will notice that there is a fair few films that have this ability.

If you want a multi region blu-ray then you will have to pay a little more money but this is understandable if you are getting more than most players.

This is one is fairly cheap however it might be like the other one you were going to get.

This one isn't so cheap but it does tell you in the description that it is a Blu-ray multi region.

And no much like DVRAB different features are added for some Blu-ray depending on region. But as I said sometimes they are region free which makes it OK.

More than 70% of US Bluray discs are region free and this enables companies to release the same disc worldwide saving them a lot of expense.

A few key titles are not region free and you should check out comparison sites to see whether any titles are important to you.

Unless you are into Criterion Collection releases (who lock all their US Blurays) its unlikely that you will find a large amount of locked discs that you want , but you might be like me and find that although there are only a few titles they are must have ones.

The US Planet of the Apes set was the one that did it for me.
The UK set misses out the extended version of the final film aswell as the 200 page hardcover book so I had to get the US one.

I have a few Criterion titles too and there were a few releases that came out earlier in the US .

Unless you get a cheapie you might find the extra cost involved in getting a MR Bluray player is hard to justify.

The best thing is being able to preorder US titles without worrying whether they will be region free
